Comparison

Seems a pretty well thought out comparison showing the differences between the two versions, basically it appears to be more eye candy and better management of resources.

Feedback from several people who have been using it is "Not yet."

Most uninstalled it. complaining of instability, odd taskbar positioning on wide-screen monitors or kludgey menus.  One who continues to use it is doing so more as an experiment.  Odd to think that the developers of such a polished DE would drop a giant turd in the punch bowl.

I could post more than a link ;-P

But when I posted these a was rather busy, but thought a would post anyway.

I like the look new look personally, but ive not got round to trying it so my judgement would be based on what other people said.

I did learn in the Linux world its always best to be one step behind everything as the bug's tend to get fixed by the new adopters, not people like me who wait for it to be fixed.

Did you want more info in all the post's a make?

Plasma is the new desktop shell. Plasma provides a panel, a menu and other intuitive means to interact with the desktop and applications.

KWin, KDE's proven window manager, now supports advanced compositing features. Hardware accelerated painting takes care of a smoother and more intuitive interaction with windows.

Oxygen is the KDE 4.0 artwork. Oxygen provides a consistent, easy on the eye and beautiful artwork concept.

Is the main changes to the desktop. Or at least the GUI side of things.

Goodbye Vista, KDE has arrived

Now I personally don't think that this is quite true or even a valid topic to discuss but it was interesting to read none the less.

Vista is'nt what it was meant to be we all know that and well KDE appears to be a nice new swanky GUI, that did meet its targets, however both appeal to a different user base and whilst Vista has to be stable, KDE is only a developers release from my understanding so its going to contain bugs. How many people would complain if Vista kept crashing? Alot I would assume, how many when KDE does not so many as its what they have come to expect.

KDE 4.0:Sweet follow Sour

A very indepth opinion of the new KDE written in the authors own opinion. I found many aspects of it interesting and its very tempting for me to switch to Kubuntu and test out KDE 4.0. Although I think I will still wait a while yet. Has anyone else changed or are you considering changing to the latest version?

Give your opinion's on what you have read about it. Or if you have even tried it what did you think?

Making of KDE 4.0

Quote
KDE 4.0 is an important stage in the desktop's environment. But Olson stresses that, in the true free software tradition, it is simply part of the ongoing development process. "We are totally selling the fact that KDE 4.0 is the starting line, not the finishing line," he says. "Now we get to get rolling."

Editorial

Well thought and a very good read imo. I tend to stick with KDE if I can and this really is a well thought out reasoned approach to it. There are also a few very good links in the editorial.

Here is my somewhat lousy analogy for KDE 4. You’ve lived in a house (KDE 3) for years. You have everything set the way you want it to, have gotten used to the oddities of it and love it. Some major parts of it have fallen into disrepair (arts) and it is time to move. You decide to build a new house from the ground up (KDE 4). It reaches a point where you can move into it, or stay in the old one for a few more months. You decide to move. The old house had cable. The neighborhood for the new on is being wired for cable, but it isn’t available just yet. Is your old house better because it had cable? Is the new one a failure because cable isn’t ready yet? The new house has a different thermostat that is quite different from the old one, and you can’t set it the same way you could the old. The builder promises that in a couple of months you will have three thermostats to choose from that are a lot better than the old one, but at least the current one works. The builder also says that if you do move in, he’ll listen to things you don’t like and give you the opportunity to change things, instead of just giving you something set in stone. He even promises to continue to improve the house for years to come. You can either live in the old house for a while longer and watch the progress of the new one and stay comfortable; or jump into the new one and get used to it. Odds are you aren’t going to complain that you shouldn’t even have built a new house. Particularly because it is free and built at no cost to you. It could be worse; you could be in the luxury prison down the street, where the prisoners complain that the old one, while bad, was much better than the new one.

The KDE Release Event is today. I had hoped to go, but the complete lack of free flights complicated it. Congratulations again to everyone involved. You have a lot to be proud of, and a lot more work ahead.
