I'd like to connect an enclosure directly to the SATA port on the motherboard using an external (shielded) SATA to eSATA cable. Just wondering if anyone has tried this, and if there any loops I'll have to jump through to make it work.
My only PCI slot is occupied with a sound card, so I'll have to find/make a hole through which I'll need to thread the cable.
Thanks...

Thanks for the quick reply. I've seen those PCI plates that convert a SATA port to an eSATA one. However, I don't have another PCI slot, so instead, I hope I can simply remove one of the ports I don't need in the back such as the serial port and simply insert the cable through it.

I had a SB75G2 some years ago, and had mixed results with external SATA, depending on the drive used. You'll probably be OK.

Well, I ponied up for a WD My Book Ext drive with eSATA. I have an internal SATA drive that is connected to SATA 0, and this drive is connected directly to SATA 1.
The BIOS shows the internal drive as Primary Master and the new drive as Primary Slave. It appears no matter how I configure things, the 2 SATA drives end up on the same IDE channel.
In any case, the BIOS sees the drive and identifies it with model number, but Windows (Vista) shows no sign of the drive whatsoever (device manager, explorer). Is there something I'm overlooking?

Did the drive come with some kind of software that needs to be installed in vista by chance?

Don't know enough about VISTA. In XP - Control Panel Administrative Tools Computer Management Disk Management I'm skeptical about this showing anything - as Device Manager doesn't show the drive.
