Well in regard to Windows XP, this is how those parameters were stored:
Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex]
"FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant]
"UseAdvancedSearchAlways"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001
"CaseSensitive"=dword:00000000
"SearchSlowFiles"=dword:00000000

I'd try and merge them with Vista reboot, double-check them (to see if they were overwritten) then see if Explorer's search plugin begins behaving the way it used to.

There are a lot of minor little changes that I find annoying like the console window defaulting to OVERSTRIKE as oppsed to INSERT _and_ "DosKey /Insert" not fixing the issue.  Also there's no longer a GUI method for telling Explorer to underline the "ALT"+"{operand}" letter.  In the time it takes me to press Alt, sit there and look I could've been well on my way with the mouse.  That method requires memorization for efficient usage.  (which I do anyway but still)

But at the same time I have to remind myself that this is Windows version 6.0.  Windows version 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 also lacked a lot of little features like that.  Perhaps these missing elements will be added back as the O/S matures to version 6.1/2 etcetera... at least I hope so.

BTW, this operating system is WORSE when it comes to reverse color-schemes.  I had expected them to improve upon that... not go in completely the opposite direction.  Then again it may not be worse... I just may have to learn to edit XML files... Wink

The only problem I've had with vista is trying to find the folders I knew exactly where they were in XP but with Vista they're randomly moved.  Also, I hate that the built in search thing in the windows explorer window doesn't search system or hidden files so it's of no use to me.

I have the same trouble, I hate Vista for that. Even the Vista Window explorer is clumbsy compared to the XP (or previous) windows explorers.

Also i find Windows explorer locks up on my Laptop randomly when i try to manipulate a file (ie copy delete etc). Often, not always you right hand click and the hour glass will appear. Finally an end process box will appear which you can use to stop the lock up. Then if you retry manipulating the file again, it might work or you might go through the same process again.
I tend to think this is because I disabled the indexing feature, as I was fed up with my hard drive thrashing around forever. Hopefully they will address this on SP1.

In XP, usually add-ons in the form of column-handlers caused that by creating a resource deadlock.  This I observed happening particularly after codec pack(s) were installed.  (and it's a baddddd idea to install those for multiple reasons)  Run AutoRuns disable your column-handlers and try again.  If push comes to shove, run Process Monitor and you'll find out exactly what's going on while that file is being accessed.

You can install V64, but you may not be able to get back into your HPFS partition without resetting the PRAM/OptionRAM.  Once back in, bootcamp will require that you delete the original partition rather than ever-so-simply reestablish the dual-boot.  In other words, you’ll go in an apparently endless cycle trying to install Vista64.  As for the driver situation I was able to get them directly from ATI and if I remember right, [strike]XP[/strike] (EDIT V64 /EDIT) had already come with drivers that supported the other hardware on the iMac.  Laptops I'd imagine are a totally different story.  BootCamp refuses to install on V64.  It's not designed for it.

EDIT 08y03m04d_085152:  Correction in bold.

As for the operand underline issue I'll need to find the equivalent registry turn-on switch in XP and hope it works in Vista as well.

Brother couldn't get Leopard's eMail to work.  My, my what a clutsy GUI.  For receiving eMail you have to set authentication as "Password" but for sending you have to configure authentication "None".  In addition the wizard just flat-out fails to work no matter how you configure it.  Took over 30 minutes of looking at logs and fiddling with settings to fall-upon that solution.  BTW, according to the logs it still has to password authenticate when sending eMail.  Go figure...
