Microsoft cuts Vista prices to urge upgrades

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it plans to cut prices of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move aimed at pushing customers to switch to the newest version of Windows.

The world's largest software maker said it plans to lower retail prices for Vista in 70 countries later this year in tandem with the shipment of the first major update to Vista, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1).

In all honesty, I wouldn't upgrade to Vista in its' present incarnation, on any of my PC's even if they gave it to me for free.

Upgraded to it on day one.  Nice to know that those buying retail get it for a discount, thats the first time Windows prices have changed since 1990, and who knew that despite inflation they'd come down.  Too bad they aren't adjusting OEM pricing though, as thats the version I use for most of my clients.

Hey that would be great news to me!  I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of Vista Ultimate Retail for a while now.  I'll be keeping my eyes open for better deals now!

They probably lowered Retail because they're allowing anyone under the sun to buy OEM now, so retail sales were slowing and retail sales is what they quote for how good Vista is doing overall.  They don't count system builder OEM versions.

Thats not actually true.  Retail sales is always less than 3% of their total sales of any OS dating back to the DOS days.  I'm pretty sure that the 100 million copies that they have sold don't represent only 3% of the total, if it did, well, I guess everyone has Vista and there are multiple copies in every PC owners home.   Wink

how's that apply to what I said?  When ever anyone says, "Vista is selling like crap" they quote retail sales, or at a minimum compare retail sales of Vista to MacOS Retail Sales (the only way to get new MacOS) and that number doesn't include OEM System Builder (sysem builder, generic OEM, not HP, compaq, acer, dell, etc) which can now be purchased from many places on line and has little restrictions that it used to have, so OEM System Builder is eating away at retail sales even though more end useres are buying Vista than is showing up on retail sales alone, so they lowered Retail pricing to be a little closer to OEM to try and entice people away from OEM and to buy retail.

I figure that's at least part of the reason.  Obviously their's no one reason alone.

Be interesting to compare the best of prices in the US vs Europe (UK)

I recently bought Vista Premium 64 OEM for £60 ($120). The company I bought it form dynamically prices and is considered good value http://www.ebuyer.com/product/123067
So prices change on a daily basis, where it had been £75 ($150) a couple of days previous.

The Newegg price is just slightly cheaper:-

Is NewEgg considered one of the cheaper e-tailors, or are there better prices to be had stateside out there?

Newegg is one of the better e-tailors. Others might have a sale on a few or single item for less and might or might not have it in stock.

But for the bulk of your purchases Newegg can't really be beat in the states.

I always got the impression OD American's generally liked NewEgg, but i didn't know if they were neccessarily the cheapest. As you know, in this day and age good service isn't usually synonymous with cheap prices - of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.

depends on the part.  Some smaller fans and cooling stuff http://www.svc.com/ or http://www.frozencpu.com/ has a better price.  For regular components it depends on what it is and who still has old stock upping the pirce.  Check mwave.com, zipzoomfly.com, and NCIXus.com (they're out of canada but now ship to the US), tigerdirect.com (though they're usually more than the other three)

MrBlob - Where has MS ever released their retail sales numbers? I've never been aware of them seperating them out vs. just giving a complete sales number including OEM sales...
