Ive been doing some research as to the best GPU to buy for Folders as I would like to purchase a new GPU in the next few months and dedicate it to folding.

Here's what I've found so far:

Do your experiences agree with this benchmark?

Post your results per day and list which GPU you are using, so we can compile our own unofficial chart!!

Hey, Babar.

I got my 8800GT without even considering folding - there was no folding client for it at the time.  It was about $150, and it runs my 1920x1200 screen wonderfully on COD4.

Then, I got the folding client for it this last weekend.  And I think I'll be clocking over 3000 ppd.

The day will come when the clients will support multiple cards - my mobo can run three.  This is getting interesting.

I think the hardware couldn't keep up with the research needs.  Now, we can.  Hang on tight.

It really does look like that 8800GT is making a big difference FactorX.

Hmmm...  My Athlon X2 Black Edition at 3.07 GHz was getting around 600 ppd.  I was using both cores.  Maybe that chart is per core?

The Techreport tests do not use SMP clients so the results you see in the chart will only be for the standard client.

Kind of inaccurate huh?

I never used the SMP client for my dual-core.  They recommended against it.  I ran two separate 'text-only' clients.  600+ ppd.

Now, each of my dual cores run at 67% just to keep my folding (video) card happy.

PS:  I'll reiterate.  This GPU2 folding thing is a paradigm-shift.  Period.

With the text-only SMP core I get roughly 2100 points every 48hrs with my Allendale dualcore clocked at 2.7ghz. Comes out to about 1050ppd or 525 a core.

Over 3500 ppd on the 8800GT so far.  Whew!  I'm sure I'll get used to it soon.  Then what?

Then buy a 260 or 280 and help push Sudhian folding forward. Smiley

Did you know that THG just overtook us? Bastards!

I just bought a 4850. Anyone running F@H on this GPU?

I hope you are by now, Babar!

Let's go!  In the last month, 10688 has gone from 30,000 ppd to 40,000!  I think I've shoveled in about 3500 of them with my humble 8800GT.

I'm experimenting with one core folding and the other feeding my Folding card.

Bring it on like Donkey Kong.

It appears at this time that the 4800 series cards are getting lower PPD scores than the 3800 series cards.  One person posted on the main Folding Forum that he was only getting around 1500 PPD with his 4850 card.

Apparently (from what I understand of the posters at the F@H forums) this is because the AMD/ATI gpu client is entirely reliant on clockspeed rather than the stream processors. So while 48xx series has 800 SP compared to the 38xx's 320, the client runs slower because the 48xx is clocked lower.

Go figure.

Although, if what I'm seeing is right, there is an AMD dev (or a team) working on scaling the gpu client to take advantage of the 800 SP in the 48xx line. Which should translate into a LOT more ppd.
