ubuntu 9.10 on averatech 3200 laptop?
NOTE: it has only 512MB (2700 333DDR) & a Mobile AMD Athlonâ„¢ XP-M 2000+

This is my brother-in-laws & has lost the xp disk!
One day after going AT&T DSL wireless broadband, he gets hit with a slew of viruses! (spent all day zapping junk)
There's a reason for that - AV (ca) was from 2004 with updates to match!

He also has an iPhone & iTunes needs to be used.

TIPS anyone???

Would xubuntu be a better choice than ubuntu for the old laptop?

xfe is a better gui for an laptop with the spec you mention, than say gnome. xfce is also good, what xubuntu is based on.

update: xubuntu (LiveCD) runs just fine on the laptop.
I told him xp is near death & skip a new disk.  But he is a iTunes Junkie.
Also comodo cis, spybot, eset online scanner, malwarebytes killed all network access.


Here is another kicker an old dell w/ Win2k & 129mb needs to be online too. I spotted the same games/adware that stared the problem installed. It was a used pc they bought from work. I don't think they have the OS for that one too.  Good luck with support ;}

I'm thinking of Puppy Linux or something like that for them?
They will need web/mail/office suite/simple games.


Me personally I could almost crossover to Linux if I could get Dreamweaver & CorelDRAW Suit to run.

Update:  installed Xubuntu on the old laptop without any problems at all, even picked up the AT&T wireless network  

Went with Puppy Linux on the other old computer, no problem their either.

The odd thing is no problems.... I'm not use to that with Windows XP.  What did I do wrong???

No problems?  That's the way it should be!  Except for one of my old pc's I've had great good luck with Ubuntu and xubuntu, and excellent luck with Puppy.
