On Monday, I received a non-functioning (which I knew about) 1st Generation Time Capsule that I bought from an online "friend". I took it to Zero One Media Center ( http://www.01mediacenter.com/), an advertiser on the Adam Carolla Podcast, because they had a coupon for a free diagnostic ( http://www.01mediacenter.com/pages/ace-discount). Monday night I found the following: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3351My unit falls within the serial number range mentioned in the article, so I e-mailed Zero One about it. On Tuesday, was told by Zero One Media the following: I submitted the repair as a whole unit swap under AppleCare. Unfortunately the program only covers units up to 3 years after purchase date so the repair was rejected by Apple. (The unit was apparently bought in April 2008.) I e-mailed an old high school friend who works for Apple and he suggested I take the unit to an Apple Store to see if they can help me. I went to my local Apple Store last night and told the Genius my whole sorry tale. Without saying another word, he went in the back and came out with a refurbished 1st Generation Time Capsule and swapped it out. Apple Absolutely ROCKS!!! MotionMan

Didnt realize you were an avid Apple user. I wasn't the last time we were here at the same time. About 2009 I went all Apple: Now we have 2 iPhones, 2 Touches, 2 MacBooks, 2 Minis, an AppleTV2, an Airport Express, an Airport Extreme and the Time Capsule in my family. MacMotionMan

Wow.... nice customer service. I've heard bad things about Apple store customer service but I've always had a good experience when I've gone in to the stores.

Its not all roses in Apple stores as there have been many issues over time but overall a better experience than other competitors.

I have never had a bad experience at my 2 local Apple stores. I think those that have bad experiences either expect too much (i usually expect nothing) or go in with the wrong attitude. MotionMan MotionMan

The reports of problems are pretty well known, one about issues with an iPad that got alot of attention in NYC and the iPhone antenna issues which got a bit messy in some areas.

But were those hardware issues or "bad customer service at the Apple store" issues? MotionMan

Both as the issue was hardware related but the way they handled it intially was very poor.
It was pretty much nationwide but as always happens Apple backs off and treats theiur customers as they should.
One of the issues was an iPad at the NYC store that had a meltdown and they didnt want to take responsibility for it.

Their best policy is that almost nothing smaller than their Macbooks are repared, but just swapped for a new/refurbished one. Their worst policy is that almost no manufacturing problems are their problem unless they've been sentenced in court.
