My SX58H7 needs help.
Getting it repaired will cost ~70 USD plus shipping.
A new MB would cost about 300 so the choice is a no-brainer.

IMO the newest chipset/CPU's don't offer THAT much more performance[if any] vs a 980X in a X58 chipset.
This is what happens when there is nobody nipping at Intel's tail; their stuck in neutral.

Moore's law, indeed.

My motherboard fried in this case the other day. The Shuttle RMA policy is a bit stupid because I cant find the person who sold it to me now. I'm kind of relieved it's dead though, the thing just ran too hot. I think components have just outgrown these SFF boxes. I'm going to go the opposite end of the spectrum and buy a Coolermaster Haf X.

Hi there

I am sorry to hear about your SX58H7 motherboard failure, at the least the motherboard is repairable and 70 $ is a lot less than 300 for a new one.

I dont own a sx58 so I dont any personal experience, but I my view shuttle should modify their case covers with mesh windows or improved the method they use to stamp the cooling holes in the case, this would greatly improve the internal cooling, at least for the more powerful models and whilst we are at it, they should fit a second fan to the ice cooler to improve cooling and lower the noise.

My reasoning is simple the H7 case is virtually identical to the g2/g5 and they had to deal with a lot less heat since they had 250 watt psu fitted, and the most recent models look like they follow the same patern excpet we have a 500 watt psu. this will allow you to power a top the range card which also be very long, so it will block airflow on one side of the case , and the other side is partially blocked by the psu. so that doesnt leave a lot of room for the air to enter inside the case

just my 2 cents as they say

hello jturbo, hmm...it's a thought.
Can't say it's a bad idea.
With me, the problem was personal ineptitude.
I fried a ram slot and it took out twin ram sticks before I figured it out.
now getting BSOD's every so often for no known reason.
once one piece is fried who knows what else got juiced.
thought about getting another J3 or H7 Pro but decided against it.
The H7 is the pick of the litter IMO.
If they repair the MB it should last until ... it's worth an upgrade.
Thats my hope anyway.

shuttleguy, Don't think your going to be happy with that big box.
While it's great to work in them with all that room,
most of the time you look at them and they seem as big as a house.
good luck with it

With 2 boxes out for repair [SX58H7, SX58J3] a replaced SG33G5 has been pressed into service.
HDMI jumper excluded, a nice box.
Currently running with a E4400 at 3Ghz it's equipped with 8Gb ram, 128 corsair SSD, 1TB WD black, 2TB WD green, IDE DVD, Powercolor 6850.
Kind of limited with a 250W PSU currently used. A newer 80+ 300W PSU I have doesn't fit without some cutting and don't want to go there.
Occasional BSOD mar an otherwise enjoyable experience. In a pinch this could serve as a primary box.
Then I would consider upgrading the psu and seeing what a eVGA 580 could do with that cpu.

Update: Got the H7 back today, a new MB.

Will hold off on replacing the SG33G5 until I get my J3 back.

The underrated G5 will return to retirement with the better of H7-J3  assuming  primary box duties.

both have new bios [within the last month....]

I got the H7 back online and it runs well.

Had to roll back the bios to O in order to OC the 980x.

That P bios wouldn't let me overclock.

Kind of strange.

Got the J3 back so I'm whole again.

SG33G5 is going back into retirement.

Why do I feel so soiled and jaded...

The G5 with a 6850 did everything asked of it.

Some slight slowdowns while pushing a 27" ASUS.

I atribute that to the E4400...even running at 3G don't know if it could really satisfy the beast in STALKER.

Good to go and even have a great backup box if my kids/gkids don't steal it.

Damn, if they do then I'll have to look at SB-E..maybe.
