Finally solved the instability problem with my SN78SH7. The answer is to use unganged mode for the memory in BIOS. I experienced no end of trouble for over a year regardless of operating system or graphics cards, 3 attempts to try different memory sticks and larger power supply. Turned out to be a BIOS setting.

Mostly suffered the instability with video processing load like watching HD video.

Now runs typically at 47 degrees, whereas on ganged mode 75 degrees was normal and crashes at 90ish degrees.

My SN78SH7 has 2 x 2GB Micron 16HTF25664AY-800J3 modules and I have tried it both ganged and unganged and it works perfectly fine either way. Also I am running a 3.0 GHz Phenom II 945 cpu and even with the high performance power scheme in Windows 7 it idles at around 37 degrees and gets up to around 45 on full load. This is with Speedfan set at min fan speed 45% and max 65%, desired core temp 40 degrees. The temperature in this room is 19.5 C.

That's one cold room contrex. Maybe you should turn the fan up and sit next to the exhaust with prime95 going, it will warm your ankles ;-)

That's one cold room contrex.

19.5 Celsius is 67.1 degrees in the ancient Fahrenheit scale; it's early Spring here; I find it quite comfortable; much more would be stifling. According to a BBC survey most people here find 18 to 21 C a comfortable temperature range for the home.

A rose by any name....

I agree, cool rather than warm is best for me.

Some do enjoy sweat dripping. The hotter the better.

Not I.

I have the phenom 965 and it definitely ran hot in ganged mode and was unstable in windows and linux. Unganged, cool and stable.
