I've just bought an SV24, C3 933MHz, 256MB Ram, 40GB Barracude HDD from overclockers.co.uk and dabs.com here in the UK, at a cost of around £410.

My mission is to make it (near)silent. So what I need is to buy:
- Passive heatsink for C3 CPU (e.g. Coolmaster DP5-GN01)
- Quieter PSU fan
- Quieter extractor fan

However, I can't find the Coolmaster heatsink anywhere (***in the UK***), and would like to buy all three together to keep shipping costs down. Also, I'd like people's advice on which fans are the best in terms of quietness (I'm willing to pay more for even teeny variations in noise).

Wish me luck with building the system - it's the first time I've ever built a PC, and if it works I want to make quite a few to use in the computer room in my hall here at Nottingham University.

The system will replace my dinky Sony VAIO PCG-C1VE laptop with a Crusoe CPU - it's hard-drive is just too noisy for me. I was happy for a while with the laptop in a draw to silence it, but unfortunately that caused it to overheat and crash. I *may* be interested in selling it if anyone wants it - say for around £800?

Your help would be much appreciated!

Visit my website for cooler quiet fans. I run a C3 866 fanless with quiet PSU and Exttractor fans.

Very silent!

I also have a ATI Radeon All In Wonder in there. I changed the fan on that too. Still silent!

by the way, I use a coolermaster copper heatsink on my Via C3.

My cpu never goes above 41C even under full load

I am investigating getting the passive cooler (Coolmaster DP5-GN01) that Jake mentions, but having little luck so far...

Once I source the I plan to sell a couple of cooling kits for the SV24 shortly:

1> For passively cooled CPU setups
Rear case fan: Papst 612NGL (16dba)
PSU fan: Multicomp MCKD0504PEB3-8 (16dba)
CPU cooler: Coolmaster DP5-GN01 (noiseless!)

2> For SV's using the supplied low profile CPU cooler
Rear case fan & PSU fan as above.
CPU fan: Papst 612f (27dba)

If you want any more info, then mail me

Cheers

That's great ultim8pc - thanks for doing the research for me. If you find that the coolermaster isn't the best passive heatsink on the block then there's no reason not to use a better one - like I said, it's just the only one on the Via website that has a tick against the 933MHz C3 CPU.

I still haven't got my SV24 yet - supposed to arrive last week from overclockers.co.uk but apparently the delivery was refused - probably because I live in a university hall and the courier didn't know to give it to the mail room. I hope they bring their brain with them tomorrow!

I'll let people know how good the quiet kits are from ultim8pc when I buy the bits.

Jake.
