I'm right in asuming that using the CPU cooling mod will kill any raid performance you have....

The register 52/55/92/95 modification can slow RAID down a little. When Windows NT/2000/XP or your cooling utility halts the CPU, the PCI bus is disrupted. These disruptions can occur thousands of times per second, and they affect the device trying to transfer data at the time.

It didn't seem to slow down my Promise RAID much. But I recall seeing some other PCI controllers being affected. And, SBLive and PCI128 sound cards are definitely affected by it.

My sandra benchmarks dropped from over 32000 to just over 27000 with the reg 95 halt enabled.

"Halt" enable did cause a hissing-poping sound in my less-than perfect AC97 on-board sound. I plan to invest in a Santa Cruz sound card next week... I disabled this great command for now. I did enjoy a significant reduction in my CPU temp though.

HauzDaug, Sandra is a very pessimistic benchmark. While I can sometimes get a Sandra rating of 27000 from a single new hard disk, I can't always do so. And, if the hard disk is full of stuff already, Sandra will rate it much lower.

If you're questioning Sandra's results, then get HDTach and look at its results. But, HDTach's scores are measured in megabytes-per-second, so they can't be compared to Sandra's final score. They can be compared to either Sandra's individual scores, or to my junky-but-free HDSPEED program's scores.

The best ATA100 hard disks in my home PCs have a burst rate of 75-85 MB/second and a sustained data rate of 41MB/second.

And don't look at mine to compare. Mine is two ATA133 drives in Raid 0 formation, using WinXP and NTFS. All these things will impact on benchmarking performance.
