Right, and I'm assuming that you are looking at this when you first boot up?  IF so, yes, there will be nothing running in there.  If it's minimized to the systray or running as a service, it won't show up in the applications tab.  2000 has this same quirky trait.  It seems as though unless it's running visible in the task bar, the applications tab shows nothing.

In short, unless this affects how the PC performs or nothing is showing up even with stuff loaded in the taskbar, (aka the regular program buttons) then don't worry about it.  The most effect it will have if the latter is true is that if a program dies you won't be able to kill it.  That's all.

What I wanted to do was do the Ctrl-Alt+delete thing before I started a game. On the process tab there are a lot running but did not know what to shut down. I shut down all except Systray and Explorer and my desktop dissapeared.

Because some of those processes belong to the system and include other items like the Themes service, for example. U should not disable everything, only what u know what it is and don't need...

Hope this help,

Ric.

Take a look at Black Viper . The page lists the various services that are installed and gives an overview of what the service does, what services can be changed from Automatic to Manual to Disabled.

I guess a seperate login could be created with the modified services for gaming. Not sure though but it couldn't hurt to try. I would create the login, change one service and see if it applies to just that profile or all profiles.

At any rate the individual claims that 5 - 70 MB of memory can be reclaimed for gaming. Don't skim the page, read each line, it appears a good deal of work went into making sure all bases were covered.

Ok, I'm curious.  Does this program also work for Win98se?  I've got a couple of machines that still run 98se and I think that would be very helpful.

This strikes me as unecessary meddling with the system.  If there are idle processes not required by the game, and you are short on memory, WindowsXP is intelligent enough to swap these processes out of memory itself.  I'd be very surprised if you see any performance difference at all by doing this.
