Greetings all. Like many of you, I'm a comp-u-holic. HardOCP's watercooled Xbox story was great fun when I checked that out, and a PC built in a NES case was great fun back when the thread started MONTHS ago. Never did go back and see how it finished. =(
But I recently joined these forums and love the conversations, the stratagies, and the stories. The Commodore PC threads have been great (both the older portable and the newer original style), as well as the SS51G info, the gBox items, and much, much, more.
For a long time now I've wanted to put a PC in either a PS2 or Xbox case. But just getting an "empty" case wouldn't be cheap... and then there was the matter of parts, what would fit, etc... and I didn't have the first clue as to what I should use. But I'm thinking the smart folks in this forum would probably be the right sorts to ask to help make my dream come true. =)
This is an idea of one of my favoriate PC mods. But I don't even know where the case came from, let alone what parts were used to make it work.
Anyone already built a PC in either of these cases, and have any info. on how they'd go about it... and where to get empty "chassis" in the first place?
Thanks,
Merk

Yes, ebay will have either cases or just dead PS units. As for mobo, if you dont mind it not being ultra-powerful, i do think the VIA Eden/EPIA platform is about as small as it gets. 110 bucks, comes with non-upgradeable 800mhz cpu, which benchmarks @ PIII/400 speeds. I have heard it feels much quicker though. 1U rackmount power supplies are also a good thing to use. Welcome.

Thanks to you both for your replies.
Maybe I'm not searching right, but I couldn't find the clear Playstation 2 cases on Ebay. I only found them listed at one web site, and they were out of stock of every color... and didn't mention the manufacturer so I could look elsewhere. Add to that, it appeared they only sold the TOP of the Playstation 2, with the power/reset and eject buttons... and I just don't know if that's going to work.
I've looked at the BAD units... and it seems most broken PS2's are going for between $75 and $125 bucks. Seems a lot for a machine that doesn't work, but I'm sure MOST people are sending them to Sony and having them fixed assuming they can't fix them themselves.
Well... if anyone has an EMPTY PS2 or XBox "chassis", and would be interested in selling it... please let me know.
As far as motherboards go, I'm leaning toward implementing this project with either an AMD 1.4GHz CPU I have handy, or getting a P4 2.4GHz 533 since the price has dropped... and making this my primary system. I think this would require the Xbox "box", as I don't think the PS2 has room for those kind of parts, even with an external PS, etc. But if anyone else has seen or done these sorts of mods, or simply has more info... I'd love to see what's been done with what. =)

you do know that you can put windows XP on an XBOX, right? that'd be the cheapest HTPC in existance... (not sure on your application, it'd make a crappy desktop computer, but a great htpc...) my favorite suggestion yet to be tried: get the biggest hard drive you can find and make a case out of it -neil

I'd love to see a PC in a gamecube case (Or a similar style case) actually, now that would be pretty sexy, and the handle would be damn useful for us student typed who need to move our stuff regularly :-)

I definately want to replace the guts of any "case" I use, as I'm used to AMD 1.4GHz and faster systems with better hardware. Even if I *could* get XP running on the Xbox, I can't think of one reason I *would*.
I just love the SFF idea, and with prices SO high for the SS51G, etc... I wonder if I couldn't use something I like the look of better for maybe less money.

P.S. God knows pulling the Xbox drive and replacing it with a DVD-R/CD-R drive wouldn't suck. =)
