The Windows98SE KT7 AMD1300Mhz 'was running using a dial up connection. I loaded a Nic Card,Drivers,Service Provider Driver /software for DSL modem. Noticed the FAQ for the "Long Boot Time For KT7" in Pauls FAqs. The computer takes almost 12 minutes to boot from a power on. The Post runs, windows starts, and nothing is heard again for that time until the screen finally comes on. Asked the service provider about the 'get server assigned IP',but this was in relationship to the Nic card itself.
Windows98/SE from all of what I know about 'network (where art thou network) is denoted to exist from the Network Neighborhood, - e.g. Ipx/Spx. But the problem exists neverthe less for the boot up of the computer. AND for the TCP/IP bound to the Nick card a TCP setting has been suggested and added from a techsupport chat session,so  , I'm still trying to recognize which thing do adjust,or how to approach the problem.
All mine for now.Any experience in the area.?

- any suggestions would be helpful.

Hit the "Network neighborhood" icon with a right-click, choose "properties". From there, choose the TCP binded to your NIC (Not the PPOE), Then Set an IP adress for the NIC.

Click "properties" once the TCP/NIC bind has been highlighted.

Also, if you have NetBeui and IPX/SPX protocols but aren't on a lan (using a hub, swith or router), delete them.

Then check your nick's settings. Most are set to "auto-sense", but some routers/modems have bad NWAY negociation, try setting it at 100TX, if it still does'nt work, go to 10BaseT, (Most modems are 10BaseT, anyways...).

If this does'nt resolve your problems, just drop back in, but with all system specs and modem type...

Yes I was refering to this post:

  http://www.sudhian.com/faqs.cfm/fid/2/fcid/18.sud#72

Since I don't have an internal 'lan (intranet),and am not using a 'network persay,I do not 'know if the faqs reference to 'assinged names could pertain to my given situation. The article seems to say to '
enter something but I don't know what that something would be in terms of numeral mechansism.
I haven't any experience with lans, nics, setting up protocols etc. I will note that the NIC 'was sharing an IRQ with the video card,so I disabled the two serial ports onboard.

Dont know where the problem is if this specific FAQ from sudhian is specific to something different. Would rather not enter anything there is this case. Note my service provider gave me some numerals to enter into the TCP section for the NIC ,this I did, these weren't there by default, but I believe this was for 'some reason on their part. I haven't contacted them for this 'slow boot up,that is the reply so far from the support is to 'take some stuff off the start up files, and this for sure isn't allivieating the problem.

No IPX/SPX onboard.No shared Files . Messenger,and Netmeeting onboard.

Oh,Windows Updates wont update gives me an error  Windows Update Error #0x80072EFT,this too is an FAQ answered but not especially specific to THIS error message. I've read so many FAQs that are not specific in any given situation.
