One of the first settings I would change after installing Win95, 98, or ME was autoplay. I always turned it off since the autorun programs would always try to install something I already had on my system, or didn't want on my system. DVDs are notorious when it comes to autorun programs. I hate having to minimize WinDVD in order to close some damn pop up installation program that is slowing down WinDVD's performance. I would also like to be able to pop my UT2K3 CD into my drive without the game always asking me if I want to install the game. As far as I'm concerned, I've wasted playing time waiting for the autoplay program to initialize and having to close it.
I know Windows XP has the option to set autoplay preferences, but we all know that the preference settings never quell the autorun program problem. If there is a registry setting I can modify to stop autoplay once and for all, please let me know.

Hi Demon_Hunter, Are you saying that the procedure for turning off auto-play for in the following link does not work completely? http://www.theeldergeek.com/turn_off_cd_autoplay.htmThen how about doing this way? =========================== Turn off Auto-Play for CD's =========================== 1.Go to Start->Run->gpedit.msc 2.Computer Config -> Administrative Template -> System 3.Double click Turn Off Autoplay 4.Enable it Let me know what your results are. Take care.

Hey Mudd, thx for the info but I cannot get your second suggestion working. Are you using XP Pro and accessing something I cannot? The file or command you typed cannot be found on my system. I've looked under administrative tools and used regedit to search the registry for strings I might be able to modify, but alas, nothing. As for what the elder geek said, I had set take no action the very first day I installed XP. I still have CDs and DVDs running programs when I inset them despite all autoplay tabs set to take no action.

Better update your profile with the WinXP version you have - Home OR Professional. Now, it's not clear... Also, I don't think Seagate makes any ATA133 hard drives.

Hi Demon_Hunter, Yes, I am using WinXP Pro. The second suggestion I just took from a web site I found. It is not something I actually tried. It's quite possible that if you are using WinXP Home that some security options are disabled that you would normally have in WinXP Pro. I just tried looking in my "Administrative Tools" folder also, and could not find anything equivelent to the "gpedit.msc" command. Why don't you do what I did to find this info, and do a search on google.com? There are many web sites that talk about tweaks and tricks for WinXP. Take care.

Gpedit.msc is the Group Policy Editor. You'll find it in Windows\System32. You can't access it in any other way.

How about simply using TWEAK UI? It's coded by MS programmers, and allows to change many settings, including the performance-killing, obnoxious "eye candy". It can be Downloaded from Microsoft's website on the Windows XP power toys section

Yes Demon,
the Windows XP "eye candy" is hard for me to deal with too. I use a modified "classic" Windows look on my desktop. Where did Blade (Wesley Snipes) go?
