Windows 98 Settings Problems

Hello all,

I have a number of long standing problems with my Windows 98 PC (at home, just me).  I think all of them are just “parameters” that I have to set.  They are all things that happen that I wish didn’t.

1. I cannot shut down Windows.  After I click on START - SHUT DOWN - SHUT DOWN - OK the screen just flashes and I am back to where I started.  If I try RESTART IN MSDOS MODE, it also says “One or more programs did not close.  Quit your other programs and try again.”

2. Every minute or two it asks: “Microsoft Networking.  No domain server was available to validate your password.  You may not be able to gain access to some network resources.”  I click on cancel and it immediately says, “Enter Network Password.  Enter your network password for Microsoft Networking” and I click on cancel again.

3. When I double click on an icon, normally it runs the program associated with it.  However, something unknown happens and suddenly it displays a little option list: “Open, Explore, Find, . . .” and I have to click on “Open”.  (I can get that list with a right click if I want it, I believe.)

4. I use AOL and when I receive mail from some subscriptions (e.g. Yahoo Groups), it doesn’t add “>” to everything the previous person wrote, like it does for other subscribers.  They go back and forth and every new response adds another level of “>”, but I get a message/post and it’s the same number of “>”, so I add “>” in front of everything that is already there and it comes out all jagged when it appears posted.

Wow, to me it sounds like you have a bunch of programs fighting with each other.  It may just be better to just backup what you need, format it and reinstall.  Each of those can be fixed individually, but it sounds less like a settings issue and more like a "windows is trying to die" issue.

With the 1st one, that's usually caused by a rogue program that's stopping the shutdown process or sending it the kill signal thus preventing you from shutting down.  I get that periodically on my windows when I've horked a program in memory somewhere and need to reboot to fix it.

With the 2nd one, go into the control panel, network, then click on "Client for Microsoft Networks" and select properties.  Make sure there's no check in "log onto windows nt domain" and below that it set to quick login.

With the 3rd one, you might have mouse driver issues or your mouse click rate is set too low.  First, uninstall any special mouse software you have installed (hold off reinstalling it for a while if you can) then go into the mouse control panel and reset all your settings for double click speed, mouse tracking speed and other items like that.

With the 4th one that would be an AOL client configuration issue (gee, like that's suprising) that I think you should bug AOL about.  It has to do with the way the email client handles mail.

Hope those help.  But either way, I doubt a good reinstall would hurt either.

"Back-up and re-install" I second that motion, violently !

"AOL" - I'll give a prayer for you, even if god is dead. (Bill gates is alive, is'nt he?)

Bill gates is alive, is'nt he?

Many of us wish he was dead right along with Microsoft.

First and foremost:

Wreck-It: Rest assured, God is certainly not dead.

Anonymous:  I agree with the others, back-up and reinstall.

Here's a link to a good guide if you need it.
