Mandrake 9.0 Dolphin ROCKS!

I'm starting to like this thread! Ok, even though i'm not quite ready with the imaging software floppy i've been trying to concoct, i'm install ing mandrake. My most important issues seemed to be adressed. Now let see if my can keep my whitts and do this without having another bout of the "screw this" stress-attack...

Something went wrong. Yet again. I'll try to get the whole disk cleaned out, and start over. I'll post an update later on

<< I run Mandrake 9.0 / Win98SE on my SS51G.  Sound works fine under Windows, but I checked last night and found that it wasn't running under Linux.

Install and run RedHat Sound Configuration Utility(sndconfig). It's included with your MDK distro.
If you use apt from ibiblio, you can also do apt-get install sndconfig to install it.
Once installed, do
~name]$ su
Password:
~name]# sndconfig
The sound configuration utility will come up and ask if it's ok to run. "Yes" should be highlighted. Hit "enter".
It will then tell you what soundcard was found. "OK" should be highlighted. Hit "enter".
It will then say it's going to play a sound sample for you. "OK" should be highlighted. Hit "enter".
When the sample is complete, it will ask if you heard it. "Yes" should be highlighted. Hit "enter".
Next it will tell you it's going to write the config file. "OK" should be highlighted. Hit "enter".
Done. You now have sound.

<< I guess the distro you use depends on what you are using the box for.  Mandrake 9.0 doesn't recognize the sound card on my SS51, but Red Hat 7.3 does.
I tried Mandrake, but didn't see much advantage other than better online docs and support for XMMS (Red Hat 8.0 dropped it). >>



Fixed if you do the following:
Go to freshrpms.net and d/l apt for RH 8.0.
Once installed, do
~name]$ su
Password:
~name]# apt-get update
~name]# apt-get install mpeg123
That's it. RH8 can now play mp3's.



<< I probably will use mostly Red Hat on my machine with occassional excusions over to Win98SE.



For a product generated by volunteers, Linux is still pretty amazing.  For a product generated by high paid professionals, Windows is still pretty lousy.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I dumped Windows completely about 3 months ago and can't recall a time that I've been more satisfied with my computing experiences.
