hey guys

i ordered a xbox online yesterday it should be here pretty soon.  i just have a few questions....
first, are the xbox games on dvd format or cd?  i was just curious because PC games still seem to be coming on CDs.

secondly, when ripping CDs onto the xbox what compression format do they use? mp3? wma? what bit-rate?

also, i hear that the xbox does not read CD-R discs, is that true?

i look forward to playing it once it arrives

thx

Xbox uses dvds  and can also play dvd movies with the addition of the dvd infrared controller.

I have no idea what format it uses but you can copy music directly to the drive to play with some games that allow it and for your own listening pleasure.
You might go over to www.xbreporter.com for more details on the Xbox.

Yes Xbox cant read cd-rs but can read cdrws,CC

that is really odd.  can't read CD-R's but CAN read CD-RW's.  very interesting.  i wonder why...
most CD stereos can play CD-R's but not CD-RW's...
interesting....

The explanation I was given is it uses a lower power laser and thus can read cdrws but not cdrs but honestly I have no way of veryifying the reasons or accuracy of this,CC

cool.

the system will arrive tomorrow (too bad they don't ship on christmas day).  i was just wondering, is there a video or audio quality difference between connecting the xbox straight to the tv or connecting it to the vcr using composite cables?

would the picture quality be better if i used a s-video connection?

Id connect it straight to the tv which is preferred but the sound can be  connected to whatever you chose. I have mine connected to a 2.1 Monsoon setup with sub woofer and it sounds very good, particularly with dvd movies,CC

The xbox dvd drives are custom dumbed down drives, that have had the laser power tweaked, so itll only read dvds,  some not all cdrws work and some not all dvdrw's work.

I read an article about TV out in a magazine, they say S-Video (S-VHS) is much better quality than Composite.
SCART is the best out there, but not available for most graphics cards...
