Hi all

I am thinking about buying one of the new shuttle XPCs and after reading your forums about noise levels I was wondering how the noise compares to a normal full sized system.

I am on a budget and would appreciate your suggestions on  which CPU and ram to get (both slots filled)  I am in the UK so UK prices would be helpful.

My first impressions of the SN41G2 is that it was not as quiet as I expected. However, after comparing it to my old PC and a couple of friends' PCs it is quieter and the "drone" is at a low enough frequency to fade into the background after a few minutes. It is relatively simple to replace the CPU fan with a quieter version and I guess part of the fun is to try and make the PC as silent as possible - at least that's what I want to do.

If you're on a budget, go for an Athlon processor based XPC. You'll get more bang for your buck and I haven't personally experienced any incompatibilities or stability problems that some hardcore Intel zealots like to go on about as a reason for not buying AMD. You can buy an Athlon XP 2200 for around £70 which is excellent value. Try
http://www.pcindex.co.uk to compare prices of UK suppliers for items such as disks, processors, video cards etc.

It's very easy to get drawn into the impression that you need to buy turbo charged kit at premium prices in order to use your PC. If you're on a budget then you can still build a kick-a*s PC without blowing the bank.

The noise is much less tahn a normal sysetm. If you decide to invest another 10-15 pounds to replace the stock 80 mm fan that comes with the system with a silent one, it will be almost silent.

Bah u guys sure u cant just blue tack a 120mm Papst with 53cfm and 26db on the back?

Could cover the entire back of the Shuttle and should keep the entire Shuttle well cool, proberly even passive up the p/s

Theres a nice 80mm Papst with 12db/20cfm @ OcUK for 17 quid.... Could just buy that and 7 volt mod it and run like at 6-7db and 12cfm or so ?

Indeed..... wouldn;t mind the 2200+ as it's the .13 micron build, with some speed advances over the 2100+

s'why i would love to get hold of 2200+ at £70ish!!!
