story goes like this...

had a floppy, took it out and replace it with the PC10 6-in-1 card reader. (who needs a floppy anyway?!)
Well, i do! gotta flash da DVD-ROM to make it region free and i thought since i have a floppy drive in storage...

opened up the sb51g and hooked up the floppy drive while leaving the card reader as is. Everything seems fine, bios/XP recognized floppy, the green light is lit when i put in a floppy disk... but no twirling motor sound from the drive and a message tells me to insert floppy even when there is a floppy inside.  checked the cable to make sure it is lined up properly. also uninstalled the floppy controller so XP can install it again... still no go.

any other suggestion?

This may be a dumb question but did you add it to the boot order in the BIOS?

i did... but the problem is, the drive is not reading the floppy even in windows. each time i tried reading the floppy, the drive asked me to insert a floppy disk. funny thing is, the green light lit up briefly but i don't hear the familiar twirling sound the floppy drive makes when it tries to read.

wonder if it is because i left the 6-in-1 card reader in? should i take it out?

Are you sure the cable is the correct way? Last time I hooked up a floppy I had to flip the cable to get it working correctly.

Also, try starting with the simple stuff. Get your machine to attempt to boot from the floppy before messing with Windows. Keep it as simple as possible at first until you start making some headway.

You say the green light is on when a floppy is in?  It shouldn't be unless it's accessing it.  That usually indicates the cable is the wrong way round (twist at the floppy end, don't forget!).

One thing I've found in the past is that if I've had a floppy in the drive and booted with the cable the wrong way round, the floppy is then shafted.  I've had to recable and then rake out a fresh floppy.
