I have just formatted my HDD to rule out software conflicts whilst trying to install XP Pro on my SN41G2.  I wish I hadn't had to but I really need it up and running asap.  Anyway, I can't remember whether I had important stuff on it or not so I was wondering if there's any decent data recovery software I could try?

Data recovery from a formatted drive?   Nope.....
Maybe the Feds have tools for that but once it is formatted and an OS intalled on it you are pretty well done.

That depends on how it got formatted. Have you written anything over it yet? There are things you could do, but if you are asking the question, then you're probably not technical enough to recover anything.

bah as long as you just formatted it and didn't go installing tons of stuff on it yet probably most is recoverable.  check out data recovery tools on google there will be more than you can imagine.  when you format pretty much all it does it writes over the fat/fat32/ntfs tables on the drive.  put it in another computer dont install anything on it and start looking around for tools.  you might/should be able to get a good chucnk of what you had on it off.

I've used Restorer 2000 several times and it's saved my butt.  Last time was when I formated my hd without backing up my outlook file (oops) I was able to recover the backup I took.  Restorer 2000
