hi Butch,
i'll check my breakers.  thanks for keeping me from frying my house

that is the heatsink i have been using for most of my computers though i used the SVC house brand of fans on the last three computers.  they cost $2.95 and are 2600RPM @ 28.3dB with 32.5CFM.  very quiet and very little money.  they move more air than the Vantec.

i am having problems with one of my new computers.  the ECS board w/XP2000+ is very unstable.  it runs for 3-5min and then freezes.  it was running at 51°C at 100% use.  the screen becomes corrupt and freezes.  i reinstalled the heatsink and checked all connections.  i should have some new (used) video cards coming and i am going to change the Power Supply.  do you have any other ideas?  i also used the white grease the second time and arctic silverIII the 1st.  thanks for the help!

Maybe try a different stick of memory.

I am going to order a few of those fans just to check them out.  If they are as you say I may get a bunch of em!

butch,
they won't be as quiet as the vantec.  i looked at your link and those are VERY quiet.  it just didn't say what the noise level was at the top speed.  do you know?

I think the Stealths are fixed speed (actually 2600 rpm's)

are they really 20 dB?  if so you can't compare the two.

Hi Butch,
very nice work!  i guess i expected bare wood.how do you keep it cool?  do you have some sort of fan to move the air over the boards?  i thought you used the Thermalright SK7?  those look like stock HS's.  is one the server or is your main computer the server?  Looks like you left room to grow  i guess i better get out there and sell some more whiskey so i can get with the program!

Great job.  i look forward to seeing the finished product!  thanks Butch

BTW, yes i have broadband so send more anytime

BC,  The enclosure is open front and back so air can flow through.  Right now I am using a small fan aimed at the front in addition to the stock AMD heatsinks and fans.  I have a wild idea brewing in my head about enclosing the whole thing and venting it outside.  Of course I will use some pretty serious fans and some sort of thermostat to control the speed.  Like I said it's still brewing!

I bought one SK7 to test.  I also bought one of the Vantec ones with the copper core and the TMD fan which I havent tried yet.  I have been buying the Retail version of the AMD CPU's because it comes with a HS and Fan and a 3 year warranty for just a few bucks more.  I still have to buy at least 6 more CPU's.  I havent decided which way I am going to go on the HS and Fans yet.

Right now I am running my Shuttle SB51G as the Linux Server (also Folding).  I have not decide yet what I am going to use for a Server permanently.

I am letting my Credit Card cool down for a few weeks and watching for more good deals.

I have room for 15 nodes total but I might wait until Winter to fire them all up.
Then I can use my MMFF to heat the whole house

LOL,
i have been getting some crazy ideas also.  i have been thinking about building it in my attic.  i might then take a chute off of the A/C to blow through and a return back to the A/C unit.  then, i would have no noise and could run whatever power right through from the breaker box.  i have been thinking about an electric attic fan anyway which would cool the attic too.  maybe i could encase it with insulation too.  am i crazy

anyway, i bought this vertical fan that works well at Walmart for $30.  it takes up less space and has 3 speeds.  it also has a remote control and has 3 wind modes: normal, natural and sleeping.  it has really helped my office cool down.  speaking of which, it sure is nice out there tonight!

BC,  I don't think the attic is a very good idea.  The AC doesn't run full time and when it cycles off the systems will overheat.  What I am thinking about is thermostatically controlled fans than run all the time.  The thermostat would control the speed of the fan/s.  The part I am not sure about is whether to vent it out side or not.  If it is vented outside you would be sucking conditioned air out of the house and that might be expensive and wasteful.  I think I may just use fans to circulate air and let the heatsink fans do the hard work.  My ATX minitower systems run about 7 degrees celcius cooler with the covers off.  I think that will suffice.

My experience with attic exhaust fans was not good.  My energy bills really went up and we had to turn the AC down lower to keep the house comfortable.  I think because my house is 50 years old and its been added on to several times, it is not very air tight and all of the AC was getting sucked out through the attic exhaust fan.

Just my .02

Hi ButchB,Probably the most efficient way to go will be to ,as you were thinking,of just having the fans to circulate the air over the units, but not vent it outside. It is most amazing how just a little air movement can lower the temps a substantial amount. Also, as you mentioned the age and all of the additions onto your house,it more than likely as you were guessing has an enormus amount of heat and cooling loss thru leakage. oh, i'm feeling dumb again.  i didn't think about the a/c turning off.  even though it seems to run all the time  well, its what i get for trying to get crazy.

one thing i need to make sure of is to get XP2100+'s that are Tbred's since they run cooler.  my 2000+ Palamino runs at 52°C while my 2600+ Tbred runs at 42°C under full load.  the latter does have a little better heatsink.  all of the others have the thermalright sk7 while the later has the SLK-800.

woodbutcher,
did you get my email?  will that RAM help you fold?  let me know.  thanks!
