Owners of ATI cards interested in viewing ATI's "Dawn" demo should check out the following at Rage3D where a group of techies have figured out a workaround to get Dawn running on DX9-capable ATI cards.  I've tried it out on an R9700 and it looks gorgeous.

I highly, highly recommend you check her out.  I spent a good half hour playing with the demo just to see what could be done.

Thanks to Tech-Report for posting this--I picked it up from there.

Are there some benchmarks that can be run on the demo to compare them?  Or is it just to show off details

a000, I heard that you can use FRAPS with it. They said that the 9800 Pro is a tad faster than the NV35 even with the OpenGL wrapper... Don't know if that's true though.

There's the usual big argument over the speed and detail of Dawn running on the 9800 vs. the FX cards over at slashdot..
Interspersed which the usual IN SOVIET RUSSIA and usual idiocy.

It's been suggested that the wrapper does a bit of optimisation  in fact, so any speed improvements might well be even more moot than they are already.

I don't personally think its speed that matters (other than needing enough to play the demo well).  The point of Dawn was never about speed, it was about detail.

And damn it looks good.

Did anybody see pictures of Dusk at E3? (Dawn's evil twin).  Maybe now we can get a demo for her.

Ehum, am i totally stupid or?
i extracted the opengl32.dll in the bin directory, but when i try to run the
demo it complains about me not having a FX-card and not supporting arb-multisample.

Am i missing some files or what?
Im using a  radeon 9500 128Mb, xp2500+, 512Mb ram, win-xp pro.

I also want to play with her...

Hehe. I heard there's a way to have Dawn naked. You just have to rename "fairy.exe" to either "3dmark03.exe" or "quake3.exe". I didn't tested that feature myself though, so I don't know if it really works, but I've seen some screenshots, so I suppose it's true...

She does look nasty, but as far as I'm concerned, she looks nasty in all the right ways....unless you prefer your women in leaves over leather.

xTian,

I'm not sure--does anyone else here have a Radeon 9500 who's gotten it to work?

Xtian,

I'm trying to run the proggie with a Sapphire 9500 NP 128 mb, NOT software modded to 9700.
Gives me a run time error... hmm maybe I need to turn on the software mod, but those darn
checkerboards drive me nuts!

Hi Hedgehog,
Im using the sapphire 9500 too. How come you get it started at all?
I must be missing some opengl drivers or something.
I run HL in opengl mode so I thought it was ok...
There is no differance with or without the opengl wrapper file for me.
HELP!

Xtian,

I don't know, but I have the software that came with the card loaded... perhaps that's the
minute difference?  I'm trying some more tweaks with 9500 np -> 9700 pro soft mod.  Will
keep you up to date.

Definitely use the omega drivers, less issues if your running into problems.

Fraps will work and its a good way to test different cards as realistically as possible,CC

Xtian,

The demo must depend on the pipeline (4 vs Cool or the processor bit rate (128 vs 256).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 9500 pro has 8 pipes.  Now someone posted that
it worked on their 9500 pro so that's what I'm going off of.

I softmodded the 9500 np with wizzards software mod and the proggie works like a charm!

As for the nude hack, the link is attached below, it's in Cyrilic but then again when has
language ever come between finding nude hacks?

Cheers, tHh

Thanx for the info Hedgehog.
I softmodded my 9500 to 9700 and now the proggie works like a charm.

But... Why am I not that impressed?
Is it because I have a real life wife of flesh and blood ?
I think she isn't very cute to begin with, and her eyes doesn't look good.
When she smile all she can her eyes get a really wierd shape, and she use
way too much eyeliner for my taste.
But I give her credit for her beautiful teeth.

Xtian,

Go boot up Quake 2 and take a look at the detail level in the faces of characters.

Then boot up Voyager: Elite Force and look at screenshots of character faces.

Then look again at Dawn.

I think you might be more impressed if you put the technology powering Dawn in contrast with the technology that powered computing not that long ago.

Dputiger
I think the main reason I'm not impressed is because I've seen the demos of HL2 from E3.
The eyes look much more natural in HL2 and also the 40 muscles that make up the
different facial expressions must be about twice as many as Dawn has.
The HL2 G-man might not be a very beautiful man, but he looks more natural to me and has
a much greater variety of believable facial expressions.

I have a Tyan Tachyon g9700 and it does not work -- I get an error message indicating that the demo only works on an FX 5200 or greater GPU.

Any ideas as to what I can do to make this demo work?

Thanks

I just checked it out.  I'm more impressed with the chimp demo.

To get it to run you need to get the OpenGL wrapper at Rage3D and if you've got a Thunderbird there is another file to get as well.

I did install the openGl from Rage3D, and I am not running a Thunderbird.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
