Windows XP Pro SP1 stopped booting after 3 days of running pretty well on SATA 120GB 7200.7 8MB buffer drive. Safe Mode boot would stop at loading mup.sys. Tried a lot of different options to recover the disk using the recover option in XP to no avail. Looks like the partition was really trashed. Tried a fresh clean install, but XP was unable to delete the existing partition.

After spending around 5-6 hrs trying out all the options, I gave up, and bought a regular IDE 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8MB buffer drive.

Reinstalled WinXP Pro SP1 on the maxtor IDE drive with no problems.

I am not sure what the problem was with the SATA config, but just wanted to provide an update for the people who may be considering a SATA drive.

It's a VIA chip that's doing the SATA.  'Nuff said.

I got a VIA USB2.0 chip in my motherboard.  'Don't work.

Etc, etc....

I'd be very surprised if anyone here reports their SATA drive working for a long time.
