good man for that hint! you put me on the right track...at least till it shuts down again.  i disabled smart in the bios, which basically runs both fans at 100%....the downside of this is that its noisy...the upside is that...well, it didn't shut down tonight, and i threw some of my fave 3d games at it!!  i still haven't put the audigy back in, and i did have an extractor fan (one of those wee pci slot occupiers) beside the gfx card.

tomorrows experiment will be with the fan speeds...i might try them at about 50% and see if that produces the desired result.  as 100% was quite noisy!

thats mighty odd though that the smart activity is not actually properly comopatible in terms of heat management.  as my processor showed fine temps before, and would shut down.

it could be time for that case mod set of fans anyway!

thanks mrkazoo....that set me right...now how do i set fanspeed to x% in the bios....

no problem. i went through the same problem but i finally figured out. i believe the system is reporting way too low temperature readings... cuz i noticed my cpu and computer was definetly NOT that cool just from touching it.

Install the included software management tool that comes on the drivers/utility CD. There is a computer management tool that you can control the fans with. I use that and the first thing i do after i boot into XP is use that and set the fans at 15%-20%. Its sufficiently quiet and I've had no problems crashing after a 24 hour torture test. Btw, you probably don't need to have a PCI cooler next to your vid card. At first I thought my video card was overheating since I have a wireless card completely blocking the airflow to it, but so far no problems.

i took out my internal audigy card, and am using onboard sound...i also took out the blower, as i thought the gfx card might overheat too....i have the fans set a lot higher though...do you have smart fans disabled in the bios?  i did, because if i start the system, at least it starts cool, with both fans running at 100%

right now the cpu fan is running at 99% and the system fan at 66%...i just set them to 50% each now and see what happens - i do think that the software utility reports the cpu temps a little too low though

can you tell me what your voltages are at from the bios?  mine are borderline...a modder friend of mine told me that it was at best a fairly unstable system from the sound fo things.

anyway, let me know those voltages if you can.  how do you like the onboard audio?

any more issues with your machine? id be interested to hear.

well, thanks again.  i feel less like i just wasted a load of money )

I actually haven't noticed my voltages at all. I'll take a look tonight when I get home. I leave my fan on SMART and then in windows I use the System Control utility and manually adjust it. That way, it's not too loud when I don't need to supercooled. For normal use, I leave it at ~15% for both fans. When gaming, I throw it up to ~70% and it keeps it cool at 30C usually.

I've done some memory tests using memtest86 and found some disturbing errors in my memory (in test 4). However, IF I change the fan settings to ALWAYS ON and then run memtest86, I get no errors ever. I'm starting to wonder what the heck is going on??? Is the CPU heat really that off? Perhaps the temperature sensor is just completely off and the temperature is not reporting as it should. Either way, I'm trying to RMA the memory just in case.

You should try memtest86 and let me know if you get the same result. I'm hoping its just a memory hardware failure and not some obscure errors.
