Hey folks --

I want to build a simple system capable of playing mp3s and divx movies, but is small enough that I can travel with it.  It has to have its own internal storage and be able to run linux.  No optical drive is required, and I would consider a 3.5" or 2.5" drive.

Can anyone give me any pointers for a system that meets these requirements?

cheers,

Consider a LEX Light.

Niced looks
Tiny size
Silent (upto 800Mhz passive C3 CPU)
External silent PSU

They have a 1GHz Nehemiah version available also, but this is actively cooled.

See here

They shortly have the upcoming 'NEO' - this is along the same lines as the Light, but has stunning looks & a passive cooled 733MHz Nehemiah C3, with CLE266 chipset. WELL NICE!

Here's a piccy I took of it at Computex..

Hope this helps

Wow, that NEO looks great -- USB 2.0 and firewire, too.  More specs here:

case spec

mothreboard spec

However, it seems like the only audio out it has is spdif -- no traditional analog out!  Or am I missing something?

Other than that, this box looks perfect.  Any similar suggestions with a 3.5" drive?

Nothing springs to mind that is really small & takes 3.5" dive. Anything I could think of would be at least 3 times the volume....

Sorry, this message was edited because it was wrong.

The Travla C-134 is still a good but loud system

PS- you can see it here:

Yeah, but the question is whether you would be able to hear the music over the fans.

I love mine but I'm still waiting for you to start selling quieter fans. My credit card is ready!

Ah it appears that the MV823A does have a analog audio out, it is in the front!  I wonder if it could be modified...

Anyone know when the NEO/MV823A will be available?  It sure looks like it fits my needs, and more with the video-in!

cheers,

Hmm, one thing I don't understand -- can you buy the case and motherboard separately with the mini-itx?  The Travla C134 is ony 20mm longer than the NEO, and even though I originally said I didn't need an optical drive, it might not be a bad trade off for 20mm.  But I like the MV823A board for the video in -- could you get the Travala with the MV823A?

Also, any of these small mini-itxs have a pcmcia slot of a wifi card?

thanks!

Maybe you want something like the ASUS DigiMatrix - WiFi built in, video in with PVR, etc. and still portable.  It's not the smallest, but it will fit a P4 proc and give you more power for games or whatever...

I made a dumb mistake and wanted to correct it. The Travla 134 will use normal size RAM without the optical drive, not a normal size hard disk. My brain has left the station and it doesn't look like it's coming back.
