In the UK I have a Cisco 827 ADSL router and would like to use this on BT OpenWorld
to replace the existing Alcatel USB 'modem'. The Cisco has a 'dial-up' function and can
be configured not to drop the connection. Can anybody englighten me exactly what I
need to do and how?

The dialup option you're talking about is a backup feature built into the modem to allow you to have at least a tiny pipe to the net during an outage of your T1.  In the case of the 827, that would be the same case.  As far as the ADSL side of it, unless this is a PPPoE connection, the DSL should not drop the connection ever.

Does this model have an ADSL (serial) and a dialup port on the back?  If I remember this modem right, there should be 4 ports back there.  1 ADSL (serial), 1 console, 1 56k modem, and 1 ethernet port.  Am I right?  I would suspect that you should just be able to configure this up like any other cisco router and it should do its job by itself.  As far as setting this up for use on your ISP, I suggest grabbing the handbook because it will tell you a lot about configuring it up the way you want it.  I haven't had enough experience with the 827 to give you anything specific however.  But this should be perty much a plug and play operation.  The hardest part will be getting the basic configs into the router.
