Good topic guys,

I (like, probably everyone else) has a friend that owns a mac, and he's constsantly saying that I should switch. I ask why, and he always seems to say the same thing... "it's just better".
That's just not a good enough reason for me. He touts the ability to edit video better(even though he has never done it), graphic applications(though he's never touched them), and the new Itunes music service(which is now available for windows). There just doesn't seem to be enough reasons.

 I don't think anybody's touched upon the subject of being able to upgrade your hardware components whenever you want. or the fact that you can easily build your own machine/shuttle for relatively cheap money. So to answer the question;

Nah,... I don't think I'd change.

I would like to know why their cinema display is sooo superior to ANY other display I've ever seen.  I've recently seen several 19-21" lcd's next to 1- 20 or 23" apple display(both running XP) and the picture is extremely clearer and brighter than all the other lcd's.  I've always been impressed with their displays whether it's been on an ibook, or e-mac. I'll give them that. Apple lcd's ...the best in the world.

 Just my 2c's

Well I am real close to making the jump.
I went and spent an hour or so last night playing on a G4 and the G5. Sweet machines.
I have been making a list and other than gaming (which I do not do often) and my DVD movi coping software, Apple software will cover everything else that I do regularly.

I have been in this love/hate relationship with MS OS for years.  Sure I love my XP box, but I would not miss it completely either.

You could always get an X-Box for gaming...and if you spend enough time on the right forums you'll learn how to do the DVD stuff on the Mac too...

i own a dell at home. but i use mac all the time at school. i'm love using mac. everything is so much easier to navigate. photoshop, final cut, peak and deck or really fun to use. people who hate macs have never fully used one. i'm sure that sat down and couldn't figure it out and something crashed so they just automatically think it sux. things crash on me all the time on my dell but i don't hate it cuz it is a dell. i just hate u.

I support the platform with the most games.  In fact despite the Mac's technical superiority to the 386 I liked the 386 much better because no one manufactured any Mac games!!!  This situation is strange considering how the Apple IIe was THE 8 bit game machine of the early to mid 80's!

Go for it MTP! I adore my new iBook! Yes, they're expensive, and yes most of Apple's hardware is propriatary (spelling?), so spares will cost you an arm and a leg from every member of your family, but the quality and attention to detail of this things is astounding!

As for software... everything you would want to use on Windows is duplicated in some way on *nix, right? You'll find that most Linux/BSD software is ported/portable to OSX. OK so open source packages aren't thier propriatary cousins down to the last bit, but its a good start (a friend of mine found binaries for OpenOffice 1.1 for OSX, so I'm gonna play with those this week!). However, most of the big software producers do Mac versions anyway, if you have wads of cash! Theres a new version of OfficeMac on the horizon I understand.

Oh and you can use a 3-button mouse if you want. All the buttons/wheels are supported, for some bizarre reason!

eyeing a G4 933 14.1 version laptop right now, might be able to pick it up cheap (under $1000).
So all I would need is the Office X for it which I can get for $150 according to the apple guy at compusa.

Course would want to upgrade the ram as well right away.

Hummm...............how do I hide this from the wife?Huh

I never thought I would, then I saw Dave Chapelle's advertisement for Apple on the Chapelle Show. He sold me on them pretty quickly.

Yes I would but I'd have to make a lot of changes to it.

Would I? Only if I had to.

I'm more then happy with Windows as it does more then everything I ask it too and I have no lingering issues. So basically I have no reason to make a switch.

I'm just waiting for MS to shoot themselves in the foot with Draconian DRM policies.

Well I ended up getting an older iBook 466SE.  I figure this way if I hate it I will not have lost much money and might be easier to resale.

Should be here next week, I let anyone know what it is like if interested.

I did last october. I use a dual 2g g5 as my main and a 15" powerbook in the livingroom (wireless). I love it. I have a couple windows servers still (need it for dev work) and 1 xp machine for games. Rest are linux boxes. Im not doing it to be elitist or whatever, My productivity has increased because there arent as many games i mean distractions on OSX. Plus its a pleasure to work in. I have all my unix tools, and some cool OSX apps. My wife likes it too, we have both been pc users for 20 years+ so it wasnt easy.

I did two years past, and havent looked back. I still use my PC for development work and have W2K router but most of my office/3D modelling is done on the Mac.

I despise the last two upgrades (to jaguar then to panther) as the cost of upgrading that often is astronomical.
Then again I could always wipe OSX and put on darwin running XF86.

I would never switch to apples, as I prefer orange juice.

I like apples alot, and i think they tend to not be out of date as quick, however gaming on them is a joke. I think i am going to be getting an ibook pretty soon though so ill have the best of both worlds.
