Please take the time to give me a hand here, please...
I've just bought a brand new PC, assembled together with a friend of mine, and then runned 3D marks 2001, wich gave me a total score of 6900.
I wouldn't be that surprised, considering my last PC (more than 2 years old) gave me a total score of 2800. The problem is that that same friend of mine got 17000...
This is my PC: - ASUS XP 2800+ - ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe - ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB - 1 GB RAM 400
I also have a Pinnacle PCTV Pro assembled on to a PCI slot (don't know if it interferes...) I'll take the change to ask anyone if running 3D Marks 2001 with TV-out ON will make any changes in the final score?
Hope you can help me. Please give some hints....

What resolution did you run the benchmark at? Were AA & FSAA enabled? I recommend not to use 3dmark as a becnhmarking tool ; instead, download fraps ( www.fraps.com) and bench your machine with your real-life games. You'll get more accurate results.

I runned the benchmark at 1024 * 768. What is the best resolution to run it? Will it make that much difference?
I don't seem to had ever heard about AA ou FSAA (But I guess it's in BIOS, right?). What does it stands for?
I'll try running fraps on UT2004 to see the results and then I'll post them here...

Tehre's no "best" resolution for running 3DMark01. Just know that the higher you go in res, the lower will be your score. You must compare apples to apples. If your friend have say 15,000 is 640x768 and you have 10,000 in 1280x1024, that doesn't mean his machine is better. Changing res will make a significant difference. As for AA and FSAA, you set it in the ATI control panel, not in the BIOS. Also, make sure Vsync is disabled (do it in the control panel too) before you run any benchmark, or your max framerate will likely be your refresh rate. It's best to bench UT2K3 & UT2K4 with integrated benchmark command (in batch files). There is a thread here about benchmarking UT2K4 with a link to download such a bacth file.

That is an awfully low score though. When you mention running with TV-out enabled, are you saying that's what you're doing? Yes I think it will affect the score lots. It's not too hard to find out......

- Installed latest chipset driver for motherboard?
- Tried Omegas driver which can be downloaded from http://www.omegacorner.com
- Tweaked settings in BIOS to lowest possible like 2 2 2 6 for the memory?
- installed any card in first pci slot? If so then move it to another slot as it's sharing resources with your video card and thereby slowing it down.

hmmm, weird...did you try benchmarking a game (real-life bench) with fraps?

OK this is the status so far...
My first PCI slot is free.
I downloaded the leatest drivers from ATI site for the Radeon 9600 series, and after a few error messages I got it working. And that was the end of my PC.
Neither I could run the benchmark until the end, neither I was able to play UT2K4 ever again... Sometimes I got a Memory error
I then toke my Radeon out of my board and installed it on a older PC with a ASUS P4B266 and a Pentium 4 @ 1.7 MHZ. And guess what? I got even more points than I got on the other PC!!!!!!
Afterwards, I placed my old Geforce 2 (that I had taken from that old PC and placed it on my A7N8X-E and got a total of 8900 points!!!!
Sometimes when turning on my A7N8X-E with Radeon I got this error - "VGA error" I pushed my Radeon depper and it resolved it. But didn't work on increasing the score.
The only diferences I can see are the AGP 4x for Geforce and the AGP 8x for Radeon... I wonder if that is not the problem?

Things you should disable from the VGA's drivers or system BIOS: Driver: Vsync Driver: Anti-Aliasing Driver: Anisotropic filtering BIOS and/or Driver: Fastwrites BIOS : Drop form AGP8X to AGP4X. Should any of these be too obscure in the driver, try running RivaTuner, wich you may DL at Guru3D. FastWrites can sometimes be disbled from the BIOS, sometimes within the driver, but mostly from the BIOS and AGP stepping is also done from there. If you encounter memory messages, you could have a problem with your driver and SideBand Addressing, however this is rather uncommon. EDIT Also, for the pupose of benching, you should set your "image quality" to best performance, this helps getting top score.

If you have any remnants left of nvidia driver in the system download Detonator Destroyer from http://www.guru3d.com/ when you put back your 9600xt card and check to see if there are any newer bios available for your mobo.

Hello there
I've now tested with another computer. from a friend of mine, and trade the VGA cards. He has a 2100+ with 256 MB pc3200 CL3, and in a Abit AN7. I also started a brand new instalation of XP on my PC, after taking all the parts out, and back in again... to the last jumper!
Both sistems we're AGP 8x, and both got wonderfull scores, such as 13000 and 14000... My board works greate with any other VGA, and my 9600 get's wonderfull results in any other board.
I don't believe in alergies among the componentes, but I think they just don't like each other!
Am I missing something???...

Please... not so fast. I'm kind of new with this... What do you mean by new bios?

The BIOS on your motherboard is upgradable. A BIOS (very) roughly consists of a few routines and the like, without which your computer wouldn't even boot at all. BIOSes are upgradable, just as drivers as. Upgrading your BIOS usually don't enhance performance but increases system stability, solves bugs and add new configuration options to your motherboard. Here is the example of the BIOS of a MSI motherboard (taken from MSI's website) :
Model Version Size Platform BIOS BIOS Date Counter K8T_Neo-FIS2R v. 1.4 301 kb AMD AMI BIOS 4/1/2004 1. This is AMI BIOS release 2. This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version: - Fixes that system can't auto slow down DDR400 to 333M with CMOS cleared + DIMM2/DIMM3 > 3 bank - Fixes that some DDR hang at D3 with DIMM2/DIMM3 > 3 bank - Auto slows down DDR400 to 333M with DIMM2/DIMM3 > 3 bank when BIOS Setup set DDR clock to DDR400.
Model Version Size Platform BIOS BIOS Date Counter K8T_Neo-FIS2R v. 1.3 301 kb AMD AMI BIOS 3/24/2004 1. This is AMI BIOS release 2. This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version: - Fixes Microsoft Wireless Multi-Media Keyboard compatibility issue.
Model Version Size Platform BIOS BIOS Date Counter K8T_Neo-FIS2R v. 1.2 301 kb AMD AMI BIOS 1/14/2004 1. This is AMI BIOS release 2. This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version: - Updates VIA SATA ROM to version 2.31 - Fixes CPU vcore selection item. - Fixes Corsair DDR466/500 stability issue. - Supports Athlon64 CG version CPU. - Adds RealTek LAN Boot ROM. - Updates VT8237 SATA ROM the wrong physical memory size
Model Version Size Platform BIOS BIOS Date Counter K8T_Neo-FIS2R v. 1.1 312 kb AMD AMI BIOS 10/30/2003 237 1. This is AMI BIOS release 2. This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version: - Supports AMD K8 CPU Cool'N'Quiet function - Updates VT8237 & Promise SATA ROM - Fixes Windows XP system info report the wrong physical memory size
Model Version Size Platform BIOS BIOS Date Counter K8T_Neo-FIS2R v. 1.0 312 kb AMD AMI BIOS 9/24/2003 126 1. This is AMI BIOS release
Updating your BIOS is easy but it's sometimes a bit frightening to newcomers as it involves modifications (in a way) to your hardware, and it can potentially damage your motherboard. You don't have to worry, just follow the instructions you'll find on your motherboard manufacturer's website and you will do fine. Usually you need to download the right file for your motherboard (eg if your motherboard is model XXXX don't download the BIOS for model YYYY. BIOS upgrade utilities usually can detect such mistakes, but still) and run an upgrade utility, but then again, all should be explained in details on your motherbopard's manufacturer website.

Fastwrites - that was it...
This was the real "BUG" I was chasing after all...
I tought I had it disabled, but after all, it was still active. Don't know how it only messed up with my board, and not with any other I placed there, but... Anyway... I would like to thank you all for the time token me, I imagine it wasn't easy.
I'm now getting minimum results of 14000 benchmarks, what seems pretty reasonable, since I haven't pushed any further... Yet!!!
UT2004 HERE I COME!!!!!

Hmm, I knew it could really endanger system stability, but I wasn't aware it could be so harmfull to performance! Glad to know you solved your problem at last - enjoy your system Keep us posted with your UT2K4 benchmark results, and if you run into another problem - post it here, that's what we are for

Hey, all you people telling him to turn off FSAA, Aniso, VSync, etc. You are wrong!! Changing these settings does nothing WHATSOEVER. 3DMark 2001 uses it's own settings, VSync is always off, for example. Also, you should test 3DMark with the Default settings. Image quality set to low will help with the score, as Wreck-It said...
