Hey guys,

I've got a very strange problem.  It started when I lifted my harddisk rack out of my shuttle.  I placed a 60mm fan with half screwed in screws on my harddisk to cool it.  I connected the fan on 7 and on a 4 pin molex.  Everything fit fine so i booted my pc.  everything was just fine untill the screen after my windows XP bootscreen :normally you have to see welcome and see the desktop , but i only got black screen.  I heard my cdrom was spinning up half way and slowing down, and it reapeated that all the time .

i thought the fan was causing the problem so i removed it... and the problem still appeared , after that i just unplugged the harddisk ide and molex and the cdrom and replugged it.  After that my problem was gone..  my windows just normally booted and no problems anymore.

When i thought:  ''this problem is over'' I replaced the fan on there and again those nasty problems, when I i did reconnect the ide's and molexes 2 times the box ran again.!  I know for sure it's not the fan causing the problem, cause since I removed it the problem was still continued!

Does anyone know what is causing the problem?? I dont get it.. this is really strange.  It can be the rack blocking something, the ide from the cdrom which is not good connected to get the computer booted...

I dont know anymore and I am scared to do some mods now because mostly every time when i remove the rack this problem comes back. (Not every time.. sometimes it works in one try)

Please help me! Im getting crazy

No..  Not on the same wire.. but the fan and the harddisk were both powered by 4 pin molex.. again i dont think the fan is causeing the problem because now I still have the problems without the fan!

If I where you I would start running tests on all my hardware to insure that I never bumped anything causing it to mess up. (memory, HDD, motherboard, ect..)

Where was the fan attached to? The hdd or the drive cage? From your first post it seems that the fan is attached to the actual hdd.

I screwed in 4 screws half the way in so the fan was kind of ''standing'' on the harddisk to blow air over it.  I made this mod to cool it down...

Whcich test are suggested?
