I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but after spending hours researching the topic, i still cannot find a definitive answer to "best 17" gaming LCD"

From Tomshardware, the Hydis 20ms Panel is the best. But i cannot find any. In a painstaking search, the following is the monitors with the hydis panel that i could identify

Hercules/Neso Prophetview 920 DVI Pro
Hyundai Q17
Iiyama AS4314U TG
Acer AL1731
Hitachi CML175SXW2B

It seems that several of theses are out of production. And the closest i can find here in Thailand is the Neso in non-DVI form. Whats weird is that while tom's and several other places has praise for the Hercules, the few reviews/posts i could find on the Acer are quite negative. In theory, they have the same panel. I can find very little information on these monitors compared with the Samsungs which have reviews galore.

Second up it seems is the AuOptronics 12ms and 16ms panels
Viewsonic VP171b
BenQ  FP 783 and 767

I cannot figure out which BenQ has DVI support. The 783 has DVI but is signicantly higher than the 767. Cannot also find out what is the difference betwen a 767, 767 v2 and 767-12. There is conflicting information out there on which of the 767's has DVI.

Lastly, Samsung's 172x

I'm pretty much confused which is the better monitor as there are conflicting reviews on about all of them. Since the Hydis panel seems almost impossible to find, it looks like its the AuOptronics for me. But i'm still confused.

if you want a gaming lcd, and you are a serious hardcore gamer... go with the samsung 172x... the response times are 12ms, and im pretty sure its been tested. I have the sony HX series 17 inch panel. Granted, its on the expensive side, but if you are looking for quality, it comes with exceptional contrast ratios, the response time is 16ms, which is very good, and numerous other benefits such as speakers.

When doing reseach keep this in mind: reponse time is perhaps the most important if you are a very serious gamer... contrast ratio would most likely come next as the quality of the game, movie, w/e is you are doing is greatly improved.

If price is an issue, go with anything that has 16ms or less response times, and a definate minimum of 400:1 contrast ratio.

Best of luck

Tomshardware reports that refresh specs and contrast ratios are quite misleading. Their reviews state that the 20ms Hydis panels are much more responsive than even the 12ms Samsung 172x. I've actually found quite a few reviews that were negative on the 172x's gaming performance. I think i'll be fine with the AuOptronics panel, leaning now towards a BenQ or Viewsonic. I'd classify myself as a serious gamer, but not a hardcore one. Since i mostly play slower paced FPS games instead of twitch fests like UT2004, i think i'll be ok.

It appears that all 20ms 17" panels are Hydis. All 16ms are AuOptronics, all 12ms are either Samsung or AuOptronics. This has made my search easier, but i cannot find a 20ms Hydis panel with DVI.

Well, I've got a Viewsonic VP171S and it run's beautifully for me through DVI off my Radeon.  I don't notice any ghosting blurring or anything, movies or games it runs nicely at 1280x1024.  Colors and contrast both look good.  I went nuts reading reviews too, so I just went for one and it worked out well for me

I can confirm and second what wat stated above. I did some research and interviewed a couple of retailer before I purchased the Acer AL1731. I found several tests that found the Samsung 172X to have very poor fps performance. I was this close of buying it just looking at technical specs and its awesome design. So how to determine which of the LCDs is the magic one? Answer: I took my SFF box and went to a local store and asked if I could try my rig with their Acers. They said: knock yourself out. I went home with a new LCD in the back seat. That specs are misleading and varying is not a joke. Many 16ms screens out there have actually been made by two synced screens that gives you around ~32ms in the end. Scary stuff

Hey wat

My 17" LCD is made by proview, and has a response time of 16ms. It plays all my current games, GTA VC, UT2k4, UT, Unreal II etc with ease.
Proview make most of Advents LCD's they bundle with their systems over £900. I picked up my proview for £299 which is a fair price for a gaming LCD of this quality.

Colours jump out, and this is just with a VGA cable. Their DVI model is apparently even clearer.

Just to follow up, it appears that in the 17" LCD world there are

25ms - crap ones, not worth your time
20ms - Hydis one, supposedly the best for gaming, but finding one is hard and finding one with DVI appears to be even harder
16ms - There are two brands, Philips LG and AuOptronics. The AoOptronics is the second best panel after the Hydis for gaming, the PhilipsLG is supposedly ghostastic
12ms - Samsung and AuOptronics. I've read that the AuOptronics 12ms has better colors than the 16ms, but in terms of gaming responsiveness its the same. I've found mixed reviews on the samsung.

Ammis,
The Acer AL1731 is the Hydis 20ms and apparantly out of production. Actually, the only 20ms panel that i can so far identify as in production is the Hercules/Neso 920. Its also the only one i've found that had DVI.

I did some looking around, in thailand so far the AuOptronics 12ms BenQ monitors are not yet availble but the Samsung 172x can be had for $500.  Did some more searching and the Viewsonic VG700 is also a hydis panel, but again its analog only. So my question is, do i want a Analog Hydis panel or a digital AuOptronics panel?

WOOO! the ProphetView 920Pro DVI KICKS ASS!!!!

Ahem... well, its the only TFT Ive ever used, but its still great. You can see some ghosing in Windows, KDE etc... (certain websites with patterned backgrounds can give you an epileptic fit!) but in games its smooth a silk.

wat,
woah, thats odd. I purchased my hydis panel (Acer AL1731m) 6 months ago in Europe (Sweden). It's still for sale here. Strange that you don't have it over there at your place. So far I have only used the analogue connector since my poor gfx card dont support DVI. However, after my upgrade I'll plug in the DVI cable in post haste (Acer threw in all cables you need in the box on purchase, nice gesture, huh?). The model I use costs around $700 but was worth every cent of it, ghost effect dont ever occur and the gaming performance is incredible imo (and yes I have tried several brands). I'm planning on buying a VESA to mount the LCD on the wall in front of the computer. Could be a nice design. Anyway, I hope you find what you are looking for, perhaps importing one is worth the hazzle?

Ammis,

I couldn't find the 1731 on Acer's home page. I checked the asian and americas, didn't look at europe. They do have the 1715 which is listed as a 20ms panel which should make it a Hydis. Did your 1731 have DVI? I was under the impression that it did not.
