I'm helping my cousin put a system together for college and I'm not sure what video card to go with. I think he's got a pretty tight budget so I'm going to guess maybe something around $100 to $150 at most. What would be a good card in that range that will handle games well? Thanks for the help.

BFG FX5500 OC. 256 mb ram, 290 Mhz gpu, 400 Mhz RAM speed. i have had no troubles with it and it runs BF1942 at a high of 85 FPS and a low of 41 FPS with everything turned up to high. Jedi academy, multiplayer at least, at a constant 91 FPS. for some reason it goes to 19 with same settings in single player campaign and i dont know y. it runs JK2 at 60 single player. these were taken using Fraps. CoD at about 31 in full battle with everything turned up to high. overall im impressed with it.
Radeon 9600 pro's can be found for less than 150 USD but i have had bad experiences with 9600's. my friend has had good expierence with a 9600se, which go for around 80 USD on newegg. 5500 for about 120 USD and 9600PRO about 130 USD or so i think.

I would go with a 9600xt or a 9500pro if you can find one.

My personal choice at that price range-- ATI Radeon 9600XT.

if you dont need one right away you can save a bit more and pick up a ATi 9800pro for like $198.00 @ newegg. I picked one up and it plays everything awesome including Doom 3. I think you can get the most bang for your buck that way.

I agree,9800/pro or a 5900se are both great choices but as prices drop the former high end cards will be far cheaper,CC

Can anyone explain the difference in performance between the radeon sapphire 9800 pro 256mb VS. sapphire 9800 pro 256 ultimate edition? In Sweden they differ like $100, geez. Thanks for any info that shed light on this.
