After a month of online research and a month of searching, I finally bought a 17" LCD screen. I originally planned on getting one based on a Hydis 20ms panel, but could not find one with DVI support here in Thailand. So i decided to go for one of the new 12ms panels. The Benq's are ugly. The 767 is plasticy and cheap looking and the 783 is just to weird. Instead I bought the Samsung 172x, despite Tomshardware saying the Benq was better. I found a store that sold the 172x for $475, but it will contain a dead pixel or two. For $550 you can buy a flawless one. But the trick is, you have to test it yourself at the store. So I bought one, first box they opened up the hooked up to a PC and showed a white screen and they guy was saying me its perfect. But I demanded he run the full diagnostics and show a red, green, blue and black screen as well. He was visibily annoyed but i did find a dead red pixel. So, they open another box. Repeat twice and i found my flawless screen. The next day, I spot a Hydis 20ms panel, the Acer 1731 with DVI support....arrgghhhh....
Anyways, back to the samsung. There's no ghosting, streaking or any lag. I can't see any whatsover. And i know i'm not blind as i'm an HDTV buff that spent waay tooo much on a professional ISF calibration. I've tried 3 games on it so far, Doom3, Farcry and Call of Duty and all i can note is the stunning picture and perfect geometry. Colors originally came out annoyingly blue, but the color calibration made it much better. I don't have any optical calibration hardware, just mark 1 eyeballs. Colors come out amazing in farcry and you can see great detail in the darks in doom3. Don't have UT2004, not into twitch fests.
One thing though, i need a more solid desk. The stand is small and easy to fold away which is nice, but it could be a bit sturdier. When something startles me in doom3 and i jostle my desk the screen will wobble. Maybe i just need a more solid desk.
Anyways, for my use, i'm going to have to disagree with the reviews that think this monitor still has streaking. I'll have to try Q3 or UT2004 to see how that goes.
