i'm configuring a system for a friend... and he wants a good video card with DX9 capabilities.
I found a BFG FX 5600 Ultra (800/400) AGP online for $89.
it says the minimum power supply requirement is 250Watt.

he really wants to go with the Biostar Ideq 200v,  which has a 200watt psu.

since he's only using 1 hard drive (and an optical drive, and 1 stick of ram),
do you think the 200v would be compatible with the FX 5600 Ultra video card?   or is there a huge risk in putting that card in with only 200 watts ?

my friend has the 5900 ultra in his p4 ideq, so you should be just fine

a 5600ultra is not a good video card with DX9 capabilites

bare minimum get the 5900xt or 9800 pro,

I have a Geforce 6800 which draws a lot more power, and has recommended 350W PS. i have had no problems with it in my IDeq 200V, so a fx5600 should be a piece of cake for it.

Budget constraints are why we are going with the 5600 Ultra.
he cannot afford the $170 5900 XT, nor the $180 9800 pro.

he doesnt play too many FPS's, but rather mostly RTS's and RPG's, so i reckon this card will last him years, but allow him to play a few FPS's like UT2004, Halo at low settings, and Battlefield Vietnam if he wants to.

we went with the 200v, the 5600 ultra, Athlon XP 2800, a 120GB WD ATA-100 drive, 512MB Mushkin, and an 8X dvd+/-rw , in the end it was all about $538 shipped.

thanks for the input guys!

WARNING WARNING

This might not apply to you but I said I'd post all the same. Originally I had a vanilla 3dBlaster 5600 in my 200v but when I tried to play Far Cry on high settings I was getting artifacts left right and centre even though my frame rate was perfectly acceptable (roughly 20-25). I tried different drivers and all the rest to no avail. I then noticed in RIVA tuner that the GPU clock was set at 270 instead of the 325 advertised. Sarsfield was now smelling a rat because these cards were only £40 off Dabs... I RMA'd the card and got a full refund so I reckon I wasn't the only one with problems. Just be careful with what 5600 you order. I got a 3dMark03 of 3300 with the 5600 in so the card will be up to more than you might think but stay away from 3dblaster at any rate

I have a FX5800XT in my iDEA 200N without any power problems.  I had a bundle of power problems with an ATI 9600XT.  However, with my FX5900XT I have heat troubles with the GPU when gaming.  I just installed the NV Silencer 3 and it seems to have corrected the problem.  More *testing* with Battlefiend Vietnam is coming.

Cheers,
Scott
