Ok, in case many of you don't know, my GF lives with me and has been for the last six months.  It's time at work for me to sign up for benefits for next year and so I want to put her on my medical insurance because she has none at the moment, being unemployed.  I looked it up in my benefits package and my company has a "Domestic Partner" clause and all you have to do is share an address and a bank account to qualify.

Turns out there's another stipulation.  We have to be of the same sex.  That's right, because she's my GF and not my gay male lover, we don't qualify.  We have to get married or be recognized by the state as common law husband and wife.  This extends to medical, dental, and life insurance as well.

Um yeah....

Okay, that's bizarre - how long do you have to live together to qualify as common-law?

Scut,
you live in Atlanta, Georgia! Just get married... for benefits sake. You might find that the relationship you two have is worth it in the long run

I don't believe Georgia has common law marriages.  Luckily she doesn't need any particular medical attention at the moment.  It just makes me nervous that she has none.  She's planning on getting a job soon, so she'll have to get benefits through them.  Just would have saved alot of hassle to get them now on my plan and I work for a company with good options.

Irritating.

office and report it.And inform your employer that you are doing it.That will usually get their attention.

Croc and wood are absolutely correct--sue them for discrimination!  My parents' "marriage" was an absolute nightmare which never should have happened.  I vowed long ago that I would never get married, but I would insist on a civil arrangement and that the state recognize it--anything else is discrimination!

It's all about the money my man... all about the money.

It's the same reason why "gay-marriage" didn't become an issue until Bush Junior cut-back state funding while creating new laws that cost more money.  The law adjustment dubbed the "anti Marriage Penalty" tax supposedly made it more profitable to be married than un-married.  States, with shrinking Federal budgets and sinking further into the red from having to pay for all these new laws, and law-changes, had to look at more ways of either A) Keeping more revenue  and  B) Generating more revenue.

Unlike before, you cannot possibly get away with speeding anywhere here and where I used to live.  Awhile back I read some statistics about how much revenue traffic tickets bring in and the percentage of total revenue is simply amazing.  Solving real crimes that endanger individuals on the other-hand, don't generate as much revenue.  So, while speeding offenses have been going down, unsolved crime by contrast, has been increasing.

Um no.

If this was a southern based company there wouldn't be any regulations giving gay partners benefits.

So your saying your policy isn't backwards? Your GF can't get coverage but your gay lover could? Sounds pretty backwards to me bud.

You implied it was backwards because it's from the south.  Dueling banjos?  All I'm saying is, that's not why it's backwards.

The banjo playing is iconic of anything that is backwards. The fact that your in Georgia makes it even funnier. It was just supposed to be a joke.....

We can be a bit sensitive about that banjo around here considering the movie that made it famous was filmed in Georgia on the Chattahoochee river.

The problem is, whenever you want to portray and idiot in the media, you slap a pair of overalls on him and give him a southern accent.  Enter the slackjawed yokel from the Simpsons.

Oh well, it would be funnier if it wasn't happening to me.

Either that or shave his head, give him a goatee and a pair of drumsticks

At least that characterization is more accurate.

This propaganda all stems-back from the old days of the Union vs. the Confederate.
I'll steer clear of such stereotypes... I just wish others would; in Ric's "black support eroding" thread.
I'd want to correct 90% of the responses in that miserable thread.  Maybe when I'm retired and have the time...
