WSJ reporter Fassihi;s e-mail to friends
9/29/2004 2:58:10 PM

From: [Wall Street Journal reporter] Farnaz Fassihi
Subject: From Baghdad

quote:

Iraqis like to call this mess 'the situation.' When asked 'how are thing?' they reply: 'the situation is very bad."

What they mean by situation is this: the Iraqi government doesn't  control most Iraqi cities, there are several car bombs going off each day around the country killing and injuring scores of innocent people, the
country's roads are becoming impassable and littered by hundreds of
landmines and explosive devices aimed to kill American soldiers, there are assassinations, kidnappings and beheadings. The situation,  basically, means a raging barbaric guerilla war. In four days, 110 people died and over 300 got injured in Baghdad  alone. The numbers are so shocking that the ministry of health -- which was attempting an exercise of public transparency by releasing the numbers -- has now stopped disclosing them.

Insurgents now attack Americans 87 times a day.

further on Farnaz goes on to write:

quote:

I asked a 28-year-old engineer if he and his family would participate  in
the Iraqi elections since it was the first time Iraqis could to  some degree
elect a leadership. His response summed it all: "Go and vote and risk being blown into pieces or followed by the insurgents and murdered for cooperating with the Americans? For what? To practice democracy? Are you joking?"

It doesn't matter weither you are democrat or republican, no matter who wins this November; if Iraq fails we all fail.

I wouldn't say that's totally true.  Iraq is a small piece of a larger puzzle in the middle east.  I think it would be tragic if Iraq did fail, but the US isn't going to shrivel up and die if we pull out of Iraq and it all fails apart.

If you don't care what happens to Iraq then why would you be concerned with going there in the first place, purely for "humanitarian reasons" as you said? For if we were to just pull out, your rationale would be undercut by your lack of sympathy for the humanitarian crisis which would then ensue...

So do you only support invading "small fry" for humanitarian reasons?

Does that then mean you would stay out of Iran, Saudi Arabia, and even China regardless of humanitarian situation just because they're not "small fry?"

I realize that the US isn't going to shrivel up and die.  If we gave up what kind of message would that send to any future deailings with the Middle-East?  What would that do with our efforts in Afgahnistan?  What would that do to our diminished world popularity?  If people don't care about that then they have already failed.

If Bush wins and fails to succeed what hope does that leave for the people of Iraq?  We leave the country to found its own government which will again be won by which ever terrorist group can convince the other groups to follow him.  In exchange Iraq will be led through another 100 years of rape, theft and murder.  We failed to save a country that desperately needed it.

If Kerry wins and fails to succeed we have the same situation but at least he can try to blame Bush or even broader the Republicans for starting something that even he was incapable of salvaging.  Of course anyone who would agree with that would lying to themselves because we would still have failed.

Failure to me is something that is unacceptable at this point.  It doesn't matter to me who got us into this situation.  We need someone who is going to resolve this situation and isn't going to quit till it is done right.  I've stayed out of most political discussions here because I am lead by what I feel to be right and wrong not by facts and figures.  If you don't have your facts straight then someone will beat you for it and if you do, then they'll tell you where your grammer was wrong in doing so.
