Well what a great deal of hassle.  Ive spent several hours of my life WASTED trying to get my version of HL2 to register properly with Steam with no success.  Now it appears that the Servers are down so I probably wont be able to get it sorted tonight.  I don't see how this new fangled protection is going to last any longer than 5 minutes in the hands of the best hackers and yet it has managed to annoy plenty of legitimate customers who have bought this game.

Well all I can say is thanks to Valve for:
Wasting hours of my life,
Denying me access to software I have legitamately purchased,
Stressing me out.

All I can say is tommorrow I take the game back to the store and wait until a cracked version appears (F*ck you Valve!).

Damn has it really been that hard for everyone?  I was considering going to the store tonight on the way home and trying to get a copy (if they still have some), but the fact "Chronicles of Riddick" just came out I'll probably go get that instead

Well, I bought it, installation takes approximately 40 minutes....then playing on steam. you have to have time to spare. It takes around 5 minutes to sign onto the authentication servers just to get into the games list. I'm absolutley loving the game. Brilliant! Thankyou Valve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to add to that, in case someone can actually help... "The file 'hl2.ico1' cannot be found in cabinet file 'hl24.cab'." Not only isn't the file in there, but the only files in HL24.CAB are related to CS:Source, which I asked it not to install.

For those who haven't installed HL2 yet, the only installation options are the destination on the hard disk, and whether to install HL2 or CS:Source or both.

Oh, and steampowered.com's forums are pretty thoroughly Slashdotted.

I was able to get the game last night just after midnight.  Today is another story though.  I can't even log into Steam, - giving me an "Can't find account" error message.

I can't even get to the Steam Forums - browswer times out.  I guess they are having some problems :-(.

I copied the files from the CDs to my hard disk. No problem reading any of the CDs, although a Nero CDSpeed ScanDisc shows that disc #4 has some marginal-quality areas.

After some experimenting, the bottom line seems to be that I can install successfully as long as I don't deselect CS:Source.

It turns out that your problem was indeed caused by you not installing Counter-Strike: Source. Read more about it HERE (scroll down to "announcements").

No, like it's been said before.  You install it then you can't play it until it's authenticated, then you don't need to authenticate it again unless you reinstall the game.  You only need to be connected to the internet/steam for authentication (or if you want to play multiplayer).

Good info GLX, but isn't Counter Strike a whole different game? Why are you being forced to install it and then remove it?
Well I went out and picked up th game at the same time I pciekd up Chronilces of Riddick.
I probably will not get around to the game until tomorrow. Watching the movie first.

The movie came out or the game came out for PC?  I didn't think the game was coming out for a while, so I guess your talking about the movie.

Counter Strike is what comes with HL2 for multiplayer.  It's kind of a different game but kinda not.

It's a bug in the installer.  Apparently Valve didn't test the installer with Counter Strike unchecked.

"Counter Strike: Source" is what Valve is calling the multy player component of HL2.
