i dont know which registry entry fixed this problem. i did a search for value: iexplore.bak and switched it to iexplore.exe.

internet explorer doesn't open any url shorcuts before i open the browser. after i open internet explorer i can open up any url shortcuts.

i've tried the point for point editing of opening files using CONTROL PANEL>FOLDER OPTIONS>FILE TYPES and have clicked on ADVANCED located near the bottom. i recall i changed my iexplorer.EXE extension to internet.BAK for some testing i was doing. after i restarted windows, i saw that windows copied a iexplorer.exe into the PROGRAM FILES>INTERNET EXPLORER folder. iexplorer will not open a url shortcut.
