If there are(referring to title) could you please recommend a program or desktop improvement so that I can have my system stats show on my desktop...ie. cpu, memory, hdd, networking usage, weather, temps and all that stuff.  Any help in finding a good one would be appreciated.  My desktop is kde...I am using Suse 9.3. Thanks.

The only half way reliable system monitoring software for Linux that I know of is lm_sensors

lm_sensors either works great or terrible, depending upon which monitoring chip your mother board uses.

Once lm_sensors is working, you can use a front end to display the info on your desktop, such as GKrellM

Here is a WEB PAGE that lists Hardware monitoring applications (scroll down to find it) using the lm_sensors package.

Good luck

Thank you....I also found that there is something called SuperKaramba or Karaba that does the same thing.....it is in the form of a theme for your desktop.  Appreciate your reply.

Edit:  I also need to figure out how to install LM_Sensors.....do you know the steps?  I tried toread the readme but it didn't help very much...I also noticed that this is a little different then compiling from source so what are the steps?

Can't help you there.  I use Fedora Core, and you can select lm_sensors as part of the Fedora Core installation.  In fact, I believe lm_sensors is selected for installation as default.  All I had to do was, as root, run "sensors-detect" from the command line, then do as it instructed as to editing config files.  Then I typed in "sensors" from the command line, and there they were.  I then installed GKrellM and that was it.

You might want to try www.linuxquestions.org as they have forums for different distros including a SUSE/Novell forum.  Or you might want to see if SUSE has a user forum and ask there.

Are you looking for system thermal monitoring tools, or eye-candy?
If you want eye-candy, one of the most popular packages out there is gkrelm, which will probably be already installed in your system, and doesn't require lm_sensors to be installed and configured to run.
Just follow the link for it that Pudge posted above.

If you are using KDE superkaramba will add lot's of eyecandy to your desktop...
For gnome look at gdesklets, and for any other wm - adesklets (which i'm using now with XFCE)

If you've got kernel 2.6 lm_sensors modules are already in.
If you are using distro kernel all neccessary modules should be compiled, so you need only to load them

Try load i2c-nforce2 and i2c-isa modules first, then run sensors-detect (from lm_sensors package) - it should detect available sensor chip(s) on your mb and ask you if you want load modules for them on system startup

In config file (/etc/sensors) you can change detailed configuration of your sensors chip (labels etc.)

There is also possibility to configure your ICE fan speed in function of temp.

Just tell if you need more support and i'll try to help

http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ssuperkaramba.html

Sorry I didn't see this before!
