Howdy,

Anyone had the chance to test an Opteron in a Qbic eq3901a

Will the bios support & boot from it ?

Additionally, I'm a bit confused with the bios updates.
G1.3  adds K8 Dual-Core support.
G1.5  adds AMD K8 E6 support - E6 is dual core, so should there already be support for it!

I'm keen to here from anyone running a dual-core CPU though - RE: heat/temperatures

Any info much appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Got myself a X2 3800 and got problems.

It is being recognised in the bios (G1.5),  however I got nothing then blue screens when installing windows.

I am not sure this is caused by the X2 but it doesn't look promissing.
Mailed Toltek today.

I just bought one today too (X2 3800+)

I still have to find a good time to shutdown the box and pull the darn thing apart. My unit usually runs 24/7 so I'm not too sure when I'll get the chance yet. I'm not fond of the qbic setup as far as cpu changes go - very time consuming (disassembling & re-assembling far too much).

p.s. I'm assuming you've done a decent memtest stress test on the system (before you started installing Windows). I've been caught out by incompatible memory (or bios memory settings) before - it was actually when I first got the eq3901.

Hi,

I thought I did a sufficient memtest, but didn't! The cause of the instabillity was corrupted memory.

The 3800 runs steady with no problems.

Die Temp: 56 c
CPU temp: 46 c
Case temp: 38 c

I cool the cpu with the zalman 7000Cu. No noise at all.

Got the cpu installed a month or more ago - NO probs to report.

Only wish the 4200+ or better (with more cache) were cheaper...

p.s. This system generally runs 24/7 but is not heavily used for gaming

I was wondering if anyone knew more information about Opteron compatability in the EQ3901.  I was thinking about getting an Opteron 165 and overclocking it.

I know its an old thread, but wondered if anyone had tried an Opteron yet?! The 144s seem to have dropped back down to reasonable prices again, approx £80 at some internet retailers. Im looking to upgrade my CPU and was looking at various alternatives, including A64 4000; an X2 4200 or 4600, or an Opteron 144. Obviously tho the key idea would be to overclock the Opteron, and that means one thing...how good the mobo is. I wonder how high an FSB the VIA chip would really support? My Nforce3 chip on the EQ3801 runs permanently at 250mhz, it really is an excellent OC'er. How high have users got the FSB on the EQ3901?

I installed a dual-core Opteron in my EQ3901 last week and so far, it's been working fine (a few crashes though - not sure if related to the CPU)! It's an AMD Opteron 180 Denmark 2.4GHz Socket 939.

Also, I put a new Zalman CNPS7000 CPU cooler in place to better manage the CPU heat. I had to remove my wifi PCI card to make enough room for the new fan.
