I am runinng the newest Nvidia drivers 23.11 for XP and for some reason games seem to be crashing every second.  I remember reading somewhere in here that there was some sort of problem going on with them.  Just wanted to confirm this and hear of any possible solutions.

Do you have AGP 4x enabled and fastwrites, if so disable them and see how performance is, also O/C can cause troubles.

Please state your OS and hardware config so that we may be able to help you more.

You might want to check the tweak section and the main page of the site which concerns a patch to fix this issue, and the threads about the 4.36 4/1s also,CC

Hehe. The 23.11 and XP problem. I was going to get XP until this popped up (I still might if the issue gets resolved, but for the moment I'm staying with Win98SE).

The following VIA Arena threads might be helpful (assuming the moderators don't mind me posting the links):

WinXP and VIA 4in1 4.36a:
http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=13&threadid=4629

WinXP and Nvidia 23.11:
http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?start=1&catid=13&threadid=4123

Be prepared for some heavy reading. Also, they have a been a few (much smaller) post on this BBS about the same problem. I would suggest doing a search on this site, but to start you off:
http://bbs.pcstats.com/viahardware/messageview.cfm?catid=18&threadid=8922

Now a lot of people have been able to 'solve' the problem by adjusting RAM times and AGP settings. A few have bypassed the issue by swaping hardware between PCI slots, throttling back the FSB and/or filling all DIMM slots with the same brand and type of RAM. The general feeling is that the issue lies within WinXP and Win2k. Both Pentium and Althon VIA based systems are affected, and possibly Intel and SiS based chipsets. I've seen reports of errors occurring AMD chipsets. Both Nvidia and MS have been quite on the subject, but VIA is trying to find a fix.

Oh, and if your using a Geforce 3, turn off fastwrites as GF3s (at the non-Ti's) don't support it.

With any luck this will be a non-issue soon. But you never know.

I would like to upgrade to XP, but I'm not touching it with a ten-foot pole until this issue is solved.

Just as an aside (to Arrow or anyone else), maybe I'm just lucky but I have a Soyo Dragon Plus with the KT266A chipset and an nVidia graphics card running 23.11 just fine under WinXP. I wouldn't want to get your hopes up or have you turn your name into "Another Guy that is Mad at FallGuy", but I don't think it is such a frequent problem that you should postpone upgrading to WinXP if you want it otherwise. I was able to stabilize everything by upgrading to the newest BIOS and tweaking my memory settings as suggested above. All in all it is a very stable system and WinXP has some "must have" features that I love.

Fallguy, I'm hope your right. If I get an extra hundred for Christmas I'll probably give XP a try (hehe, academic prices! gotta love 'em). Right XP isn't on my priority list, mainly because of the reports.

I have also noticed that many (if not the majority) of the problems are on systems built by Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc. Might have something to do with the way the systems are built and the order in which software is installed.

However, I wouldn't going posting that your system works fine in those first two threads I mention
Hehe.

I think most people have been lucky with this issue to be honest.  Myself with two computers and my friend with a similarly configured computer have had to completely reinstall Windows XP.  The 23.11 drivers completely hosed the registry and I couldn't even open the registry hive on another computer.  It would report that the Hive was not a valid registry database.  Normally, if the registry is intact and just has some messed up settings you can open it this way, unfortunately not this time.

Lesson learned though and now I am on the path of reinstallation, but I have had a few life hinderences to take care of first.  That is why I can only be on the forums now while I am at work.

Ah well, more info than you all needed to know anyway.  TTYL

Hey All.

I've had a similar problem with win98.  I'm running a pretty basic system and having some troubles with agp and 3d acceleration.  (I was on the fast track for some new stuff for Christmas, but now I'm a little worried.  I want to get this fixed before I go adding bigger and better things.)  Anyway, here are some specs:

Win 98 (not se)
Asus A7V-133 (via kt133a chipset)
TNT2 Ultra vid card.
Athlon 1GHz (133 fsb)
512MB PC133 cas 3
Bios on default/normal (as opposed to optimal) settings
Agp 2x
Via 4in1's, agp normal mode
no fastwrites, no sideband (I think)
absolutely nothing else besides cdrom, zip drive

I just built this system before school started, and I haven't had much time to use it since.  A couple weeks ago, I installed 3dmark2001 to see if everything was stable, and in the middle of the game benchmarks it stalled permanently.  Then I started removing EVERYTHING to find out what was causing the problem.  I'm down to the bare essentials and I'm still dead in the water.  I can't run 3D games either, but DirectX diagnostics say everything is ok.  I don't know what to do.

I've been shying away from the newest 4in1's and det's because I've heard they are bad news.

Does anybody have any advice as to what are the "good" settings for a via chipset with nvidia vid card.  Usually I'm a tweaker at heart, but I'd pay anything just to play a game SLOWLY right now.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Kbleft,Im assuming your pc was working fine in games and apps till you installed 3dmark2001?If so remove it because it does have problems with some setups and even though patchs are available for it your videocard doesnt even support 3dmarks 2001 features so its a waste.3dmark 2000 is still the better benchmark because very few games use the features in 3dmark2001 except the gf3.Remove it and all entries in the registry about it also and you should be fine.
Let me know if your problems began before 3dmark2001 and we will try something else but your rig looks fine,CC

When I installed these drivers in XP Pro I got a blue screen 1 sec after reboot!
I think they have major bugs!
Go back to older versions.
