A friend of mine was trying to flash his BIOS upto 5w using a USB Keyboard, but the procedure would hang without doing anything.

When he plugged in a PS2 keyboard all worked perfectly.

Does anyone else know of this issue ??

DOS USB support has always traditionally been flaky.

Keep in the mind that USB wasn't even an idea when DOS was rampant in the market place, and DOS USB support is very much hacked into the BIOS.

This leads to a question I was about to have...

Having started to "convert" to USB, first I enabled the built-in controller on my mobo...but had problems with my new WebCam, so, heeding the advice of the forum to scrap VIA's USB implementation and buy a PCI USB card, I "upgraded" to a USB 2.0 (NEC chipset) card.

Now that I've disabled the OnChip USB in the BIOS, the DOS support switches are greyed out. I fear that means that I can't use (only) the USB connection for my kbd (as I had been in the short time I had the MS Nat Kbd Pro and USB on) or my new Wireless Optical USB mouse in DOS mode. Are my fears justified? (Or will ...wonder upon wonders... they still work, or can either WPCSET or WPCEDIT allow the setting to be changed even if the OnChip USB is disabled?)

Let me know the scoop!

Thanks

Paul

...mmm...I don´t think WPCREDIT is going to help you with that. Anyway, why do you want to use DOS? If you only want to flash your BIOS, then use a PS/2 keyboard...

It's not just (or even primarily) DOS. It's that, when the BIOS supports using the USB keyboard and mouse, I can use the kbd without plugging into the PS/2 port for BIOS/Setup MODs, to get into my Adaptec BIOS when I add a new SCSI device, to skip the memory test on POST, etc.; and the mouse works during those infamous "Since Windows wasn't properly shut down..." ScanDisks and during Drive Image jobs.

And I just like having one keyboard plugged into one socket, and one mouse, also plugged in just once.

So I want to enable the BIOSs support of the USB devices...without using the on-board USB if I can avoid it.

Some guys want to get every ounce of performance out of their box. I'm happy with the most efficient hardware setup.

Someone ought to impress upon VIA the importance of releasing a *real* Win98 (et al) driver for their sucky USB implementation!

I'm so tired of seeing "The 'LabTec Webcam' device is in use by another application" when no other such program is running.
