G'day all! I've just purchased a Samsung 16X DVD (Model SD616) and cannot get it to function properly when DMA is enabled?!
Most of the problems are when trying to access exe files on regular cds (I haven't tried to run a DVD yet - god help me!). For example: Double clicking on install.exe gives you - "Install.exe cause an fault in intall.exe. If this problem persists, try restarting your computer."
When DMA is disabled in windows (ME), I can access the files no drama whatsoever but the perfomance (according to NERO drivespeed) falls from 48X to below 13X!!! I've got Power DVD 3.0 which comes with some DVD sample files and they play terrible (choppy, jerky etc) so I'm tipping it will be the same for a DVD disk.
My system is stock as they come - not overclocked or tweaked at all. It's details are:
Epox 8KTA3L+ (VIA 133A chipset) Ath TB 1.2 512 SDram Quantum 20g 7200 ATA100 P-master Samsung SD616 16X DVD P-Slave) Matsushita CDRW 32X8X4 S-Master (ATA100 80 wire Cables) nVidia 32mg TNT M64 with detonator drivers Windows ME with all the patches/upgrades Latest VIA 4in1 divers (4.36) onboard AC97 sound
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Slates

Have you tried the DVD as Master on the secondary?

Nahh.. Haven't yet, but it has been suggested to me - willl do and thanks for the reply. Also, I've recieved a post stating that they are mostly ATA33 and don't run too good on a 80cable IDE ribbon. I'll switch it with my CDRW and slap it on the 2ndary IDE Ch as the 2ndary master.
Thanks again mate.
Cheers, Slates

hm, i've heard some claim that ATAPI devices and older DMA mode 2 type drives don't get along with the 80 conductor cable, but i've yet to witness such a phenom.
Much less, i couldn't find any reason for it, since the additional wires are soley for grounding purposes. it shouldn't affect an ATAPI device at all.

yeah... Someone else just suggested I try to force UDMA33 (ie: no higher) in the BIOS, but I think my only options are AUTO or Disable. This Samsung model (SD616) is supposed to be their latest - so you'd think they would've tried it on a few systems ?
Anyway, I've got a few more tricks to try when I get home now.
Thanks!

I have just installed (today) my DVD drive 16x and had no troubles after setting it as secondary master. Watched swordfish and played a couple of music CDs and alls good.
