Final AGP Upgrade and HDTV standard in Europe

I am considering making a last upgrade to an AGP system before sticking the mobo in a small case for a poor-man's media & gaming center.
My question is this: would one of the 7800 AGP line of nVidia cards that supports 1080i offer any advantage to a European user; ie, is the 1080i likely to be part of the standard here? (Such a noob re TV stuff!).
If not, think I'll go for a nice 6800 Ultra AGP on eBay and try to unlock some pipes with Rivatuner.
The ATI X1800 is another poss. choice; an reason to pay a lot for that?
