Interesting since it seems (according to Rumor) that AMD is on the Verge of Buying ATI...we will be seeing the end of the Nvidia Platform for AMD chips...
I just have not read or seen the ATI chipset talked about yet...

Rob

I think, barring issues with the DVI, that the  Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G is the way to go for me...   (as long as I can confirm MB Headers for USB and Firewire..)

it will not result in a lack of access to AMD chips for nVidia, and any affects will take a year or so to become apparent to the end user.

has anyone yet found a high-end AM2 board using a nVidia chipset with a 16x/PCI/PCI/1x expansion slot configuration yet?

i am beginning to feel a bit silly as the originator of the "official Socket AM2  mATX motherboard" thread when I find myself looking at a new conroe system for a HTPC.

i do this not because i am wowed by the performance of the conroe chip, but purely because i cannot find a decent high-end mATX nVidia AM2 motherboard that can be used in a Silverstone LC11-M case!

Im thinking of moving to conroe as well. On a side note and OT have you spotted any useful looking C2D boards for a HTPC?

..But won't the Cheapest Conroe be in the $300+ range..  I know performance is a great thing but is it Double the performace of a $150 X2 CPU (or the Pent D CPU)  ..or would the other $150.00 be better spent on a New  or Newer video card...    I mean isn't the Conroe the Bleeding edge in Performance and PRICE??

Thanks!

The cheapest conroe is ~$183 which is the E6300. It dont wont this thread to loose focus but there is also a cheaper C2D due Q01 2007 which may be around $160. http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3372

C2D pricing: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3228

I would expect the boards (mATX) will be more expensive. Cant really find info on any.

  ;-)

Dont think this board has High-Def audio if i have read up on the realtek ALC850 chipset properly

they UK prices dropped end of last week.

£111 for an X2-3800+ is very tempting.

sorry, i don't want this thread to lose focus either, i am merely frustrated that i cannot get a suitable AM2 board to fulfil my HTPC ambitions.

I feel the same. tempted to get the K8Ngm2-FID and go with a dual core 939 chip but that really doesnt make sense.

The shopping list for my first htpc includes an AM2 based Asus M2NPB-VM in an LC11 case. Like you, I was really disappointed that the case doesn't support what appears to be a VERY common slot configuration on these types of boards (1x/16x/pci/pci).

The nvidia 6150 + AM2 seems to be a perfect choice for what I want to do. Hopefully the onboard gpu+tvout is sufficient for my needs; and I can do without a tuner for the time being... so given that I think I will proceed with the purchase anyhow and hope I'm not making a big mistake...

Another user suggested using flexible riser cards (here), which seems to be a decent solution. Except that the thread has now been stale for months, and the user never posted his results.

Anyone try installing a flexible riser in this case??? In my situation I would need a pci riser like this for a possible future tuner card, but I would imagine other users would have a need for a pci-express riser (can be found with a little searching).

Specifically, I'm curious about the reliability of mating such adapters to high bandwidth devices, and also wether the cards can be fit snugly into place and be stable and not move without the support of a "hard" riser beneath it?

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Another problem is Zalman *still* doesn't have any SFF CPU coolers for the AM2.  Their mounting solution for the CNPS7000 and CNPS8000 only work on socket 939...

Hmmm...I take that back.  A review today says the CNPS8000 works on AM2 sockets finally:
http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1991
I suspected it did because it used the center mount point, but no reviewers ever tried it up to this point...

They also had a good point about LED versions to light up the frame.  Even though Zalman hasn't announced any yet, a quick Google search picks this up:
http://www.zalman.co.kr/Upload/product/8000_eng.PDF
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:ppAKQtGJ07YJ:www.zalman.co.kr/Upload/product/8000_eng.PDF+CNPS8000-LED&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1
"Applies to all versions of CNPS8000 LED"  ;-)

That's good news, and it seems to perform well. I do question its CDN75$ price tag however.

Probably a better solution would be to hold out for the energy efficient 35W semprons to come out and invest in that instead. Hopefully the stock heatsink with cool'n'quiet will be sufficient to keep my setup relatively noise free.

When those will become available at my local computer store is anyone's guess I suppose...

i have updated the asrock 6100/410 motherboard details.

it does not have DVI or hi-def sound, and only two SATA ports.

however, it is the only 16x/PCI/PCI/1x AM2 board i have confirmed to date, so I may be forced to buy one for my LC11 project.

two killers are:
1) it's made by asrock, not a favorite of mine
2) 10/100 lan

we shall see.

or I may go Core2Duo if i can't bring myself to get this board. Sad

Good find. I'm starting to wonder why manufacturers are bothering with 1x and 4x pci-e slots. They seem as useless as the old AMR slots...

Still, the "downgrade" to an 6100 based asrock doesn't seem worth it just to be able to use the bundled riser. Have you considered trying a flexible riser like was mentionned ?

I'm still hoping that an LC11 owner will reply and give us their opinion on wether a pci card could be stable and secure while not resting on the provided "hard" riser. I mean, pci cards have a screw on one end of their panel, but what about the other side? Does it slide tightly into a slot? If so I believe it would be sufficiently stable.

I've tried finding as many pics of the LC11 as I could find, but couldn't find any conclusive evidence one way or another.

Any LC11 owners out there have some insight ?

i haven't really, as i would prefer to use the SST PCIe riser card if possible.

i am just amazed that there isn't one quality AM2 mATX board sporting a top end nVidia chipset with a >normal< expansion card configuration. Sad

on a different note:

I am offering a cookie to the first motherboard vendor who releases a nVidia MCP61P chipset board with a 16x/PCI/PCI/1x expansion slot configuration.

Heres two places selling it:

http://www.aria.co.uk/productinfocomm.asp?id=23849
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=321976

Think i might go for this one. HD audio which i didnt think it had, but i wonder whats meant by value 7.1 HD audio. Would be good to hear others experiences with it. I cant find anywhere that mentions someone having one.
