hope someone can help here so here goes.

running winME with a duron600 on a k7ta commate mobo. problem is that whenever i try to install more than 1 pci card (currently have an internal elsa modem installed) the pc starts up then as soon as i click on the start button it just locks up and then i have to reset the pc, run scandisk yada yada. i did once have an ati pci gfx card and the modem running at once but if i tried to install my old voodoo2 or my vortex soundcard it would lock up. i replaced both gfx cards with a geforce and am trying to install the soundcard but every time it locks up on the restart. any suggestions - i don't want to buy another soundcard in case this happens again (all my pci cards work fine on my old pc).

Well you really need to give a little more insight.  What power supply are you using, RAM, and do you have adequate cooling?  It may be that the power supply isn't outputting enough current or that it is poorly regulated.  RAM just is good or bad, not many that are in between.  Also, I would first try to reset the BIOs to the standard settings and make sure that your FSB is at 100 and not 133.  Please post more info back here and we can go from there.

Thanks

Try assigning each PCI slot an IRQ line in the bios. My system would halt for about 30 secs and continue booting if I let my bios assign irqs to my devices, which at first I thought were freezes.

check the mounting of your board. make sure that it's in the proper position (not off tilt a little bit).

Have you installed all necessary drivers? Dis you try with the VIA 4 in 1? Is the BIOS configured to work with a PnP OS?
You could try adding all the PCI cards you need and then reinstalling Windows ME...

the bois has been tried on failsafe defaults and optimised defaults but it makes no difference. FSB is 100 not 133. Power supply is fine too.
everything is fitted properly but i've never got to the bottom of the problem.

Spec:
commate k7ta
duron600
128mb RAM PC100
34GB IBM HD
Geforce2mx 32MB (AGP 4x)
WinME with latest 4in1 via drivers

The PC works fine until i decide to have another go at installing another pci card. was just hoping to have a half decent sound card running. if i remove the internal modem the sound card installs fine. any pointers are much appreciated
