High cpu utilization on cd

I have winxp and my system is:
AMD XP1600+ (not overclocked)
K7 DDR motherboard from dfi with
via chipset KT-266 -VT8366 and VT8233
onboard sound is disabled in both bios and on card
256 MB DDR Ram at 266 Mhz
The problem is that when i use either my cd-rw or my dvd/cd rom
the cpu utilization is really high.. they are using dma
and not on pio mode. I have them on secondary ide channel, and
my hdd on first. It's mostly when I'm copying files
to my harddrive or installing a game or some application
this happens.
I run on the xp drivers, haven't really tried any
via drivers.. but they shouldn't be necessary, or?

Hey Manic,Winxp already has Via support but are you sure dma is being used?Without it the cpu utilization is going to be really high.You may want to try a seperate utility like Sandra to check to see the drives are using Dma.Check the jumpers on the drives,settings in bios and in system and you might want to try the newer 4/1s like the 4.36 if everything checks out and you cant find the problem,CC

Be careful with those 4.36 drivers if you decide to install them. Try with older 4.35 just in case...
Is your system performance seriously compromised due to the high CPU utilization of your drives?
When do you say it´s too high? When burning CDs? When watching DVD movies? Or just when reading a file from the drive?

Right now Fox the 4.36 drivers are the preferred drivers for XP with fixes for Nvidia problems as well as some other issues.Reference article on main page of VH if you want to check it out but certainly if he can find the problem I would not change drivers unless he has no other choice,CC

I have had issues with the latest 4.36, not with the first release, and yes, he should only install the drivers as a last resource.

It's mostly when i copy files from the cd to hed harddrive it is high up .. but it might have changed, now it's like 70% in the taskmanager.. and the system isn't really affected. Yesterday, it was 99%.. gonna check if I fixed it.. but don't ask me what I did  |

If your performance is OK then don´t pay attention to CPU utilization, many times it doesn´t necessarily show performance degradation when it´s high.
Take for instance when using the SETI@HOME program. Windows XP shows 100% CPU Utilization while running it but I can play Icewind Dale or use any other CPU intesive app without a hitch.
