I sometimes get lockups.. not really often but it happens, lately it has happened when fiddling around with Mediaplayer. I run Windows XP home edition. AMD XP1600+ 256 MB DDR, TNT2 M64. Using the nvidia detonator.. 21.81. But, I have this older , Aztech PCI 383 Soundcard, it's the windows drivers I use. It has Aureal chipset on it.. could that be the problem? Would it be better to use the mainboard sound chip?

Well, the Aureal chipset can cause problems with certain configurations. What motherboard are you using?

You could try using the onboard sound just to see if it is in fact the soundcard causing the lockups (onboard sound would probably be of lower quality). If it is in fact the soundcard causing the lockups you might want to try using the 4.06.2048 drivers which you can get, here. If it isn't the soundcard then you could try using different video drivers I suppose.

It could also be your tnt2 m64 because this card has a history of problems such as lockups, freezing, and screen corruption such as icons distorted. You might try the 12.41 drivers instead if the soundcard check yngtm27 suggested doesnt work.Aureal cards are great cards but have many of the same issues the sblives had and can cause lockups very easily, good luck and merry Xmas,CC

Ok, thanks for the advices, will check the aureal vortex drivers, if that doesn't fix it I will try the onboard sound. If that doesn't do it, I will try other drivers for the tnt2 m64.. but I'm pretty sure that the next thing I'll buy is a new video card.
