From the New York Times:

Quote
WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 — Two days before he resigned as defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld submitted a classified memo to the White House that acknowledged that the Bush administration’s strategy in Iraq was not working and called for a major course correction.

Things must be getting so bad if even Rumsfeld is pushing for change.

"Pushing" may be too strong of a word.  The guy has had selective hearing to the point of threatening to fire a General if he didn't shutup or say only what he wanted to hear.  Was Rumsfeld really retired or simply promoted to another position within the Whitehouse ?  I could be wrong but the later would be the expected.

Don't normally post links but some have a hard time believinng "fat meat is greasy"...

Long before the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld forbade military strategists to develop plans for securing a post-war Iraq, the retiring commander of the Army Transportation Corps says. Brig. Gen. Mark Scheid, who also commands Fort Eustis at Newport News, Va., said Rumsfeld threatened to "fire the next person" who talked about the need for a post-war plan, and replaced Gen. Eric Shinseki, Army chief of staff, in 2003 after Shinseki told Congress hundreds of thousands of troops would be needed to secure post-war Iraq.

That's why there's a mirrored source.
After the HELL he's put people through, I won't allow him to simply flip-flop on his way out.

Intuit,

Not trying to be nitpicky, but the 'mirrored source' isn't a real website mirror, it's someone posting the first paragraph of the article on a forum, much like you did in your OP...

That said, I do remember Shinseki's resignation and the reasons behind it. It was pretty big news back then.

Maybe this from the BBC is the same story

Quote
Former US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld proposed major changes to the Bush administration's strategy in Iraq just two days before he resigned.

He made the call in a classified memo to the White House, which has been obtained by the New York Times. Mr Rumsfeld's memo says US strategy in Iraq "is not working well enough" and calls for "a major adjustment".

President Bush faces growing pressure to decide a new Iraq course with an advisory group due to report this week. "In my view it is time for a major adjustment," Mr Rumsfeld wrote in the memo dated 6 November. "Clearly, what US forces are currently doing in Iraq is not working well enough or fast enough." US national security adviser Stephen Hadley told ABC TV that President George W Bush agreed with that assessment, describing the memo as a helpful "laundry list of ideas".

Thanks for the link Nighteye.

Shinseki is a highly respected general who, frankly, has a lot more experience than Rumsfeld with military matters and ought to have been listened to more so than a political appointee pushing a political agenda (Rumsfeld). It's also very telling that military experience became scorned when it came in conflict with partisan agenda.

OT, but why would you get banned, Hugh?  It's not like I've seen you do anything dumb or against forum rules (any more than any of the rest of us anyway)?

Unless you're turning into a foaming, rabid, right-wing, bible-bashing freak?

LINC - You're not, are you?

Slight correction/modification...
Unless you're turning into a foaming, rabid, right-wing, bible-foisting freak?

The phrase, "Unto each his own." typically means little to them.
