Since I wasn't paying attention I installed Vista without using AHCI in BIOS; which in effect means the highest speed of the harddrive I can have is ATA-100, when the highest is SATA-300. If I change the setting in bios Vista cannot boot, and it fails to repair itself when trying that (when using the Vista DVD).
Is there any drivers I can install so that Vista will be able to boot, or am I forced do make a reinstall?

In Device Manager try changing the HD controller to a standard dual channel pci controller.
(had two PCs like that where it wouldn't work but it doesn't hurt to try)

Backup then BIOS update ?

I'll try change the controller when I come home.
I don't see how a BIOS update will help me, since it is the drivers that has to be installed for Vista. I tried to install them in repair mode (the boot drivers), but they failed to install.

It's strange that you can't preemtive install drivers in Vista for a boot device (I'm new to M$ products, so it's perhaps the same on XP), I mean, if the boot drive was IDE and a SATA in AHCI mode was added Vista would ask for drivers, but if one changes status of the boot drive from IDE to AHCI Vista totally $!"# itself over and can't even repair itself. It should have some generic drivers which would make the system boot, and then better drivers could be added.. AARG!

Defaults could change with BIOS updates or/and warnings could be added to the interface when changing between the modes.

Such changes did not exist with earlier revisions.  It is also possible they made some other changes that will improve stability.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

change start key value to 0

change bios to AHCI

upon reboot Vista will install new driver and after another reboot all is done.

worked for me

All hail OD! I knew that the solution must have been this simple! Still, I can't change the speed, but hey, it feels good atleast ;-)

Very useful.  Thanks!

By the way, does this apply to XP as well ?
(Suppose I could go quickly find out.)

hello all i used the same registry fix and drivers installed no problem. But what confuses me is that the sata hdd in bios still shows on third ide master and the optical sata shows on fourth ide slave. So are they still running as ide..............
Cheers

I don't know the terms, but the "device interface" is still IDE, but over SATA. There are two types, IDE and SCSI.

PATA is two channels per contact (the old type, master/slave configuration), SATA is one (only master). PATA uses 8 lines as data, SATA 2 (but is still faster). Both are IDE.

Hello Zehnsucht and thanks for the reply. i have the post on 3 different forums and your the first one to give any sort of answer. Can i in that case test you a stage further. On the Everest program both ide and sata controllers show but the ide is in blue leading me to think that they are the ones in use rather than the sata ones.
What you say???

I assume that everest is some kind of system tool? I use SIW, and here is the info I get from it:

Code:
----- [Storage Devices] ----------------------------------------------------------------
Type                  Vendor          Model                                Size       Interface   Temperature
Fixed hard disk media Western Digital WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0                  250 GBytes IDE SATA-II 46 ºC (115 ºF)
